Burma or Myanmar: That’s not the question

In late August of this year the Myanmar (Burma) military government released a list of names of activists they wanted to apprehend. About the same time the US and UN voiced objections to the treatment of detained activists and the Myanmar government’s treatment of protesters in general. The UN had asked for the activists to be released based on reports of torture and a hunger strike. During the same week the government closed the gathering that was intended to produce the country’s constitution to be voted on by the public. The 40 year rule by the military government appears to be flexing their muscle by quieting public dissent and abandoning any attempts at reforms even if they are only symbolic in nature. The country has toyed with the idea of a constitution for 14 years.

The US State Department expressed the requisite displeasure with Myanmar’s constitutional efforts characterizing them as a sham. The same day a rights group was demanding aid for a jailed activist whose was described as suffering a broken leg during arrest. The following day President Bush criticized Myanmar for their treatment of ‘peaceful’ protesters calling it ‘inexcusable.’ At this point in this narrative you may have the impression the protesters or activists plight was serious and international efforts to resolve the problems were not. You would be correct. And it continues.

During the first week of September 2007 monks in Myanmar continued their protest. This was met with a continued crackdown by the Myanmar government which was naturally followed by more verbal protests from various sources around the globe. Near the end of the week the Myanmar government released a wounded protester, sentenced six others to prison terms up to 28 years while the protests continued. The impressive response from the international community was for the US and Indonesia to urge China and India to pressure Myanmar to straighten things out.

The following week, mid-September, the United Nations issues a declaration on Indigenous Rights while the UN Human Rights chief, imagine this, expresses concern over human rights violations in the Congo, Iran and Burma. This former UN war crimes prosecutor is characterized as ‘expressing dismay’ of the Myanmar reactions to protesters as well as problems in other countries. The 47 member panel is going to review records of violations. Do any practical, timely and effective solutions ever come out of the United Nations? On their own, UN member countries display a disturbing habit of inaction, including the US. Perhaps an obligation of membership in the UN should require all countries to act in concert to halt outrageous events like those in Myanmar. Even with understandable obstacles to such action, if all member countries acted as one, a single member country would likely concede to adequate international pressure and at least cease further escalation until satisfactory solutions could be arranged. It is certainly worth a try and would be an improvement over lame expressions of disappointment.

Of course after the lame expressions of disappointment were delivered by the UN in mid-September, the Myanmar government was reported to urge the protesters to cease their activities against the ‘junta’ while the protesters asked for international intervention for their plight. By this time six weeks had expired since the Myanmar government had released the names of activists they wanted to collect.

By the third week of September the monks in Myanmar had stepped up protests and encouraged the public to join them in opposing the military. One report indicated 10,000 monks were involved in the marches in Rangoon. The government warned of retaliation and initiated curfews as the US increased sanctions against Myanmar.

By now most people are aware of the violence that followed in Myanmar in the past week. The exiled citizens providing reports and assistance with the flow of information in and out of Myanmar may have been temporarily inconvenienced by the government shutdown of internet access. Wireless communications may have allowed information to continue unimpeded. The most dramatic tragedy of the week was the slain reporter which was caught on video and freely displayed. In light of the escalation of violence more needed attention is drawn to the conflict. Not necessarily by coincidence, a UN representative has traveled to Myanmar to speak with both sides. How encouraging.

Whether you acknowledge the name Burma or Myanmar, that’s not the question. How the international community handles their mission though the United Nations is. The source for this post was numerous reports from Voice of America who toether with the BBC was criticized by the Burma/Myanmar ‘junta’ government as propagandists. Reason enough to use them as a source.

Positive news is always welcome. It has been in short supply lately. Some attribute the predominance of negative news to a liberal leaning MSM. But there are plenty of left leaning sources who claim the press is right wing while the right leaning sources claim it’s left wing. Which means the audience must rely on their own judgment in checking news.

A group of headlines viewed today are encouraging. An additional report on how Sarkozy is reinventing French politics reversing the trends from former leaders and a similar trend in the US Congress on views toward conditions in Iraq and Iran comes from the following reference. It is almost like people are beginning to understand what is at stake.

France Flips While Congress Shifts
By Charles Krauthammer
September 28, 2007

On the largest possible stage — the U.N. General Assembly — President Nicolas Sarkozy put Iran on notice. His predecessor, Jacques Chirac, had said that France could live with an Iranian nuclear bomb. Sarkozy said that France cannot.

A few months ago, the question was: Will the Democratic Congress force a withdrawal from Iraq? Today the question in Congress is: What can be done to achieve success in Iraq — most specifically, by countering Iran, which is intent on seeing us fail?

Another report had a title asking if we were friends again with France. That might be getting ahead of ourselves. After years of opposition from France in international politics and not knowing what will come of the Sarkozy period in France, a little restraint might be in order before the hugging begins.

On another front, no pun intended, SOD Gates has reeled in some victories after replacing the controversial former SOD Donald Rumsfeld. Perhaps the one characteristic of Rumsfeld’s cool appearing determination and quick remarks to shield himself from the press that forecast his fall from grace was the refusal to alter his agenda based on changing situations. It is as if current SOD Gates lost no time working other strategies in search of success. Not due to Gates alone, the public may finally be reevaluating positions on critical issues that will result in victory in Iraq as well as success in related matters.

Bob Gates’s Victory

To little notice, the Defense secretary has gotten his way on Iraq, and possibly on Iran. Now, Gates is about to appoint a former top Clinton official to prove he means business.

By Michael Hirsh
Newsweek

Sept. 27, 2007 - Defense Secretary Robert Gates is, quite by choice, the anti-Rumsfeld—a man so low-key and consensus-oriented that it’s hard to find his fingerprints on any particular policy. But no one can win internal battles the way Gates has been doing in Washington lately without leaving a few traces.

While some may view the next story as negative, anytime Ted Kennedy confirms he has overstayed his welcome in a world screaming for sensible politics is a good news day. Certainly Kennedy is not alone in adding nonsense amendments to active legislation but he must be a master at this useless self-serving practice. It is part of what makes Congress the recipient of the lowest approval rating since the earth cooled. This is not to say the amendment is invalid on its own although it is because it duplicates laws already on the books. If being convicted of a crime is not enough for liberals that they require extra vengeance if it offends their vindictive sensibilities, adding this amendment only serves to expose what is wrong with the left. Thank you Ted Kennedy for again drawing attention to the fact your self-righteous nature may inflict another inequity on the victims you so proudly misrepresent.

Kennedy’s defense priorities
By Byron York
September 28, 2007
While most senators were concentrating on defense issues during the defense reauthorization debate, Kennedy was busy trying to turn the fight over the authorization bill into a fight over something entirely different: a hate-crimes bill.

More proof of insanity among the leftmost of us. Whether it is or not an indictment of the left for falling over themselves to rub elbows with an errand boy from a land, by their own words, bent on the destruction of Israel and eliminating infidels, accepting a dinner invitation from one who supports insurgents in Iraq is beyond understanding. The only good news about this is people like Hugh Hewitt do not stay silent when those who hold themselves in high regard encourage international terrorists. Would you have dinner with someone who threatens to kill you?

There Is No Spoon Long Enough: Dining With Mahmoud
By Hugh Hewitt
Thursday, September 27, 2007

On Tuesday a group of Manhattan’s elite accepted an invitation to dine with Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadienajd. Time Magazine’s Richard Stengel recounts the vening here, and gives us a glimpse of the guest list which included NBC’s Brian Williams and CNN’s Christiane Amanpour.

What I cannot understand is how any American can accept an invitation to dine on Iran’s tab even as that regime ships weapons and advisors into Iraq to kill more of the nation’s finest. It is beyond moral confusion –it is moral collapse.

The article above and two others referenced below in a depressing fashion make the good news of the week list as they offer a record of those suggesting their superior understanding dictates not only surrender in Iraq but at every opportunity offered by those bent on their destruction. What’s the word; sheep, lemmings, just plain foolish?

By Trudy Rubin

The invitation for Tuesday dinner with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came from the Iranian Mission to the United Nations. The scene was the darkly brocaded Barclay Room of New York’s Intercontinental Hotel.

The Iranians must be texting each other with LMAO at the stupidity of some who are called Americans. Not only were they duped to appease a terrorist but they did it in New York City. There’s some irony.

Americans should not fear talking–and listening–to those whose views we loathe.
Friday, September 28, 2007 12:01 a.m. EDT

You don’t want to judge Christ by Christians, someone once said. He is perfect, they are not.

In a similar way you don’t want to judge capitalism by capitalists, or the legitimacy of democracy by the Democrats, or the vitality of our republic by the Republicans. You have to take the thing pure and in itself, while allowing for the flaws and waywardness of its practitioners.

Very good Peggy Noonan, now how about the part where the devil’s in the details. If you want to ‘talk’ with Iran you don’t do it with Nancy Pelosi wandering all over the Middle East or a cozy sit down with President Bush. Which would indicate by default that you don’t accept invitations to a quaint dinner which indicates you are honoring someone who wants to kill you. A nice opinion piece from WSJ that fits the good news of the day by displaying one more person who just doesn’t get it. You want to talk so bad but apparently you haven’t been listening. Three stories representing a record of some of America’s most naive citizens who cannot speed their own destruction fast enough. All with the blessing of the United Nations.

Wheels May Come Off the Clinton Campaign

Posted in wordpress, campaign, Clinton on September 28th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

HRC
This is rich.  A little political analysis from our friends north of the 4000 plus mile unsecured border.  A fun comparison that considers Hillary Rodham Clinton being in the same place as was Howard Dean last time around.  And wondering if the wheels may come off the Clinton campaign. In another report, Mark Penn suggested every campaign must face one event that has the potential to end the run before reaching the elections.  That would be Clinton’s top strategist.

More than Howard Dean’s now famous episode of crazed cheerleading during the campaign, placing third in Iowa and the Democratic party elite’s decision to anoint John Kerry as their standard bearer may have been the real damage done to the Dean chase for the nomination in 2004.  It is also helpful to note that current Democratic candidate John Edwards was doing quite well in the primaries of 2004 when these events took place and now he is struggling in third place and looks entirely different than the John Edwards in the previous campaign.

But enough about the unlikely nominees for 2008 and the failed attempts of 2004.  What about Hillary Rodham Clinton? The Democratic front runner has that pesky Barack Obama on her heels.  Quite the lofty lead she has in the polls.  But lately, contrary to the trend earlier in the campaign, candidates and pundits alike are indicating polls are now of limited value in predicting the outcomes.  Would that be due to candidates who are not favored by the polls and pundits who have been contradicted by the polls?  Or is it because the headlines produced by polls attract a smaller audience these days.

While the article referenced has a humorous analogy from Clinton strategists that the campaign is not so much a contest as it is a race between Hillary and the Seven Dwarfs, she is no Snow White.  She is more like the other main character.  However this blog still prefers the nickname reference found on Michelle Malkin’s site for Hillary Rodham Clinton as the Queen of Cringe.  And if you don’t find Sean Hannity’s radio show humorous when playing the Hillary laugh track (repeatedly) then your sense of humor suffers from getting way too serious about politics.

While Obama claims he will close the gap with Hillary Rodham Clinton most believe his agent of change pitch has not been adequate to overcome HRC’s campaign machine and the Bill factor.  Other pundits indicate HRC’s strength is name recognition and the ability to thwart scandal damage.  She certainly has an abundance of experience handling what some call adversity but this blog calls damage control.  The law of averages or some other mathmatical evaluation would suggest that the luck of Clinton’s will run out sometime.  As long as it happens before November 2008 the rest is simply entertainment.

When Will Hillary Rodham Clinton Crack?

Posted in wordpress, Politics, campaign, Clinton, disclosure, ethics, hillary on September 27th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Waitin' for HRC to crack
Hillary Rodham Clinton paraded Bill continuously around the country for campaign events to raise the big cash like that of Norman Hsu and to win over voters with her husband’s popularity among registered Democrats. But like she does on most issues Hillary wants to have it both ways. She wants you to remember anything positive, as her campaign crafts the message, and forget anything negative of which there is a great deal.

But it was Biden’s remark that laid bare a central quandary about Hillary Clinton’s candidacy: whether she can justifiably take credit for her husband’s successes while sidestepping the controversies and lingering questions that make some voters wary of another Clinton presidency.

“Bill Clinton had a big role tonight — he got more time in the debate than some of the candidates,” Democratic strategist Dan Newman said. “His presidency is a critical part of both Hillary’s experience argument and Obama’s argument about the need for change.”

But Clinton distanced herself from her husband as well, most notably when asked if she would ever approve torturing a suspected terrorist to prevent the detonation of a “big bomb.” She said no, but moderator Tim Russert pointed out Bill Clinton had proposed such a possibility in an interview last year.

There is plenty of reason to disagree with an opinion expressed at The Nation, referenced below, but if it represents the thinking of liberal voters it may show another chink in the Clinton armor as we wait for her to crack under pressure.

Clinton’s Real (Wrong) Politik
“I don’t believe it’s in the best interests of our country to give the United Nations what amounts to a veto,” responded Clinton.

That’s the wrong answer — way wrong. In fact, it is as wrong as anything George Bush or Dick Cheney has said about presidential war making powers.

The title from the Boston Globe piece below is a reminder of Clinton’s need to woo the fringe left antiwar base of the Democratic party and her reputation for being cold, distant and not in tune with anything other than her political ambitions. Not unlike her lame attempt at a Southern accent to appeal to voters at a civil rights memorial or her tentative handling of the Hsu scandal or embrace of lobbyists as real Americans.

Clinton lacking the emotion of her base
By Peter S. Canellos, Globe Staff
September 27, 2007

When master inquisitor Tim Russert tried to pin her down on a tough question about Israel possibly attacking Iran, she batted him away with an easy, “Tim, I think that’s one of those hypotheticals that’s better not addressed.”

News for Hillary and the Boston Globe, most topics and scenarios discussed within a debate are hypothetical. Perhaps borrowing a common phrase like not taking options off the table or that decisions cannot be made in advance would have been more reassuring. Dodging questions by describing them as hypothetical is a cop out.

The Globe’s appraisal of Clinton’s skills in debates is, well, debatable. If staying on message is one’s opinion of a skilled performance in debate then sidestepping the tough questions and not addressing what the fringe left base wants may support the Globe’s opinion of Clinton’s abilities. Likewise the following excerpt may be very much on point.

And yet last night’s New Hampshire debate, coming at a moment of fast-moving news currents regarding both Iraq and Iran, also illustrated how she might yet lose the Democratic presidential nomination.

Probably the most common and frequently discussed problem with Hillary Clinton is again her refusal to admit the wrongdoing and her willing participation in poor decisions by her husband during his Presidency. She will continue to tout any success and deny or distance herself from the failures in hopes no one will notice or we tire of demanding answers.

Clinton defends husband’s record, sets self apart
Thu Sep 27, 2007 6:42am EDT
HANOVER, New Hampshire (Reuters) - Sen. Hillary Clinton, put on the spot in a U.S. presidential debate on Wednesday over her husband’s White House record, declared she was running on her own and freely disagreed with her spouse.

Good luck convincing anyone outside the fringe left Democratic base or those who always vote party that Hillary Rodham Clinton is only good and has no bad. Just like everyone else on the planet there are both sides to HRC and her refusal to deal with it honestly may be her undoing. Just sit back and wait for her to crack under the strain of all the baggage. We should wait to see if her strategist, Mark Penn, is correct about every candidate must face a campaign ending event before the fat lady sings. Hillary’s hasn’t shown up yet but with any luck it will.

Outrage Over an Iranian Errand Boy

Middle EastIf there ever was topic for discussing freedom of speech or what is accepted as a proper response between opposing forces on this planet, the Iranian President’s attendance at Columbia University certainly fits. Polarizing opinions, outrage, indifference and a broad mixture of undefined responses fill the media this day. So what is one to make of all this?

An opinion column by Arthur Herman at the New York Post no doubt falls on the outrage side of the debate.

SQUALID MISTAKE
ACADEMIA’S UGLY BLINDNESS
By ARTHUR HERMAN
September 25, 2007 — COLUMBIA University Presi dent Lee Bollinger yester day made some cutting criticisms while introducing Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - but that doesn’t make the school’s decision to offer a platform to the head of a violent terrorist state any less abject, squalid or shameless.

Justice is BlindWho knows what Columbia University’s real motives were for inviting Iran’s President to speak. At least a couple of reports indicate the expressed reason was to allow differing points of view. It seems when the person speaking in public is extremely notorious for holding beliefs or values others find deplorable or equally disturbing, the standards or principles guiding the public view are withdrawn. That is to say people allow other people to speak or express themselves as long as that person does not exceed certain limits.

My first question would be why were those who are so enraged by this event not equally vocal in objecting to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and her trip that included Syria and at least some discussion with heads of state there?

The next reference from various sources is a contrast to Herman’s opinion column at the NT Post. Carefully reviewing sound bites from the Iranian President and comparing them to related events in Iran, the author reminds the reader of the amateur attempt by this week’s headline grabbing foreign visitor to misinform the audience. But maybe the Iranian is getting exactly what he wants. What would be a larger problem with his visit is not what people appear to be angry about but if his plan is successful in his own mind. Perhaps all this angst and attention is exactly what he wanted. A person would have to be extremely ignorant to believe he could come here and not receive the reaction he did from the outrageous statements he expressed.

Live From New York, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s Unreality Show
By Dana Milbank
Tuesday, September 25, 2007; Page A02

“For hundreds of years, we’ve lived in friendship and brotherhood with the people of Iraq,” Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told the National Press Club yesterday.

That’s true — as long as you don’t count the little unpleasantness of the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, when a million people died, some by poison gas. And you’d also have to overlook 500 years of fighting during the Ottoman Empire.

ThinkingCertainly everyone is entitled to their opinion and The Wall Street Journal is no exception. This being the third reference for this post is a reminder that as stated earlier the mixture of opinions is quite varied although most have an obvious negative reaction to that guy from Iran that everyone loves to hate.

Without previous knowledge of the article and its information below, the same thought had probably crossed many minds after hearing explanations from Columbia for their choice of speaker this week. Would you have acted the same if the potential speaker would have been Adolf Hitler? A better question might be asked about how the rest of the world responded to Hitler before he was completely in a position to do the things he did? The Iranian President or anyone else can be allowed to speak. Words are not the problem here. How the rest of the world responds to the actions of the Iranian President and people like him is the problem. As has been said many times, those who refuse to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.

Columbia’s Conceit
Exactly what would it have accomplished to “engage in a debate” with Hitler?
BY BRET STEPHENS
Tuesday, September 25, 2007 12:01 a.m. EDT

On Saturday John Coatsworth, acting dean of Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, made the remark that “if Hitler were in the United States and . . . if he were willing to engage in a debate and a discussion to be challenged by Columbia students and faculty, we would certainly invite him.” This was by way of defending the university’s decision to host a speech yesterday by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Enough with the news around the planet about this situation with Iran. No one should be overly concerned about what transpired at Columbia University this week or the UN, etc. How the world leaders will handle their responsibilities as leaders and getting a grip on war and terrorism as well as the other critical matters facing us is the real concern. The visit by and actions of the Iranian President during his visit pales in comparison to other risks.

Mitt Romney Gets It

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, GOP, internet, blog, News Media, ethics, oversight, romney, Opinion on September 25th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Mitt RomneyFrom his business acumen to his personal success to his dogged determination and discipline, Mitt Romney may be the only candidate to honestly focus on the big picture and chronic dysfunction in Washington that appeals to voters seeking real solutions. While the headline below from the WSJ reads that Romney is trying to show voters he gets it is reasonable it may be more accurate to say voters are being attracted to his common sense approach. Fans of opposing candidates cling to earlier criticism that Romney changes positions on the issues. That may simply be a case of sour grapes that their preferred candidate is unwilling or incapable of listening to the voters and acting on it.

Romney Tries to Show Voters He ‘Gets It’
By MARY JACOBY
September 24, 2007; Page A6

That is what makes Mr. Romney interesting; his unique blend of issues seems to most closely reflect, of all the Republican presidential candidates, the economic disquiet among voters.

His conclusion — “It’s going to have to be done by Republicans and Democrats together” — caused one of the initially combative AARP members to shout: “Amen!”

GOPGiuliani is often characterized as America’s mayor and relying on his legacy in NY related to 9/11. His stand on social issues is a concern for some and the campaign season is raising more questions and concerns over his days as mayor and what is real or imagined. Fred Thompson finally entered the race recently and after an expected initial bump in the numbers he seems to be placing much faith in surviving the early states and taking the South. John McCain has been all over the charts but the military and Washington veteran is enjoying some increased popularity lately.

So how is it for Romney? Still holding leads in the early states, increasing support in state’s where others lead and while some ‘diss’ the value of straw polls he just won another in the state of Michigan. The results have Romney first, McCain second, Ron Paul slightly edging out Giuliani for third, leaving Giuliani in fourth with Thompson fifth.

Romney wins Michigan straw poll

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich., 24 (UPI) — Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won 39 percent of a presidential poll of registrants to the Michigan Republican Party’s island conference Monday.

Here are some more references from a press release from the Romney campaign on the opinions of others on Mitt Romney. In the interest of fair disclosure it should be mentioned that this blog favors Mitt Romney for President. That said, whether that was the case or not the press release from the Romney campaign is a valid reference since the sources are easy to check. And it saves others :-) the work of gathering the information in a duplication of effort.

What They’re Really Saying About Governor Romney’s Message Of “Change Begins With Us”

Monday, Sep 24, 2007 Governor Romney Takes On The Republican Party’s Problems “Head On”:

The New York Times‘ David Brooks: “Thank God. Listen, Republicans need to show it’s a new Republican Party. George Bush did in 1999. They’ve been marching to disaster without promising any change, and he’s got to fill that in with some substance. But, finally some Republican candidate is going to answer that.” (ABC’s “This Week,” 9/23/07)

Conservative Activist Richard Viguerie: “‘At last, a top-tier presidential candidate is paying attention to the discouraged, disheartened and disillusioned base of the Republican Party,’ Viguerie said, pointing to a Romney TV ad criticizing the party’s ‘excessive spending, immigration amnesty and ethical slackness.’ Viguerie, a powerful voice in the party’s conservative base, said Romney ‘has taken a small but significant step toward reclaiming the GOP for the grassroots conservatives who are its backbone.’” (Jill Zuckman, “Romney Declares ‘Republican Party Got Lost’,” Chicago Tribune, 9/22/07)

The Politico’s Jonathan Martin: “If there was any doubt before now, Mitt Romney made plain today his intent to run as a change agent against a political establishment that he argues is failing the country.” (Jonathan Martin, “Romney Makes Strongest Case Yet For Change,” The Politico, 9/22/07)

National Review Online’s Jim Geraghty: “I think the ad Romney unveiled today is, far and away, his best ad and message yet…” (Jim Geraghty, “I’m A Fan Of Romney’s New Message, ‘Change Begins With Us’,” National Review Online’s “The Campaign Spot,” http://campaignspot.nationalreview.com, 9/19/07)

GOP and DemsThere are many clean up the GOP references above and many Romney related posts on this blog and one of the most recent may have been the most compelling and on point to mention here. Mitt Romney submitted an open letter the GOP and voiced the need for the party to clean up their act and that much of what needs to be done will take both parties. Although most people, candidates or voters, may have had this thought also it has been largely missing in action during the 2008 campaign. Mostly the state of GOP politics has been the favorite weapon of Think about iteveryone on the left for criticizing the GOP and deflecting criticism from the Democratic party. With Congressional ratings where they are, the deflection part has been a failure. And even with recent victories for the GOP minority in Congress the status quo needs work. Remember that Mitt Romney was the first or only one to engage that issue in the campaign for 2008 and it just may have staying power. Meaning the idea is long overdue and been mentioned before but can-do Romney may be the only one to see it through.

That’s enough of the ad lib campaigning for now. But it was about time for a post that speaks about a candidate who just may have the answers for most of you, left or right, if you can take an objective look.

The UN, GW and Abandoning Scrutiny

Posted in Science, wordpress, U.N., Opinion, Environment on September 24th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

GW
crossposted at:
Reject the UN
Screw the UN

It is doubtful the United Nations ever misses an opportunity to work the crowd and the media. If you are green or a tree hugger or a charter member of PETA (another op for Alicia Silverstone to disrobe) one can only suspect you are ecstatic over news of the UN Global Warming Summit. The rest of us may not be so sure. Not unlike the group of scientists who hold a different view of the issue than is played relentlessly in the MSM.

17,200 Scientists Dispute Global Warming

Alarmist global warming claims melt under scientific scrutiny

World scientists meet on global warming

But many top scientists reject the new figures…

This post does not accept nor reject the idea of global warming. But that is the whole point. While the global warming issue was raised near a fever pitch in anticipation of the IPCC report on global warming, the first question that should have entered your mind is who the hell is the IPCC and what credentials do they have to support the assumed credibility of their findings?

Many surprising supporters of the idea of man-made global warming are very large corporations. Those announcements were followed by the skeptics wondering what financial incentive they had to cause the voluntary participation in fighting a demon on which we have too much or too little information. Please withhold your criticism as it should be repeated again, this post does not accept nor reject the notion of global warming. But if one is the least bit skeptical or cynical of mass approval or rejection of any idea, this would be a good candidate for suspicious motives. For instance, if you have been on the planet long enough to remember the push for alternative fuels and energy conservation and other environmental issues from thirty or more years ago, the lack of enthusiasm then and over decades since should be sufficient to alert your radar. Something may be wrong here.

Leaders Gather for UN Climate Change Meeting

By Phuong Tran

Tran report (mp3) - Download 596k audio clip
Listen to Tran report (mp3) audio clip

Heads of states from more than 80 countries are gathering in New York City for what will be the largest U.N.-organized event for world leaders on climate change. This is a preliminary meeting to work toward a new international agreement on the issue. But scientists say places like sub-Saharan Africa need more than just an agreement to really fix the problem. Phuong Tran has more from VOA’s West and Central Africa Bureau in Dakar.

The IPCC who provided the grand report on global warming earlier this year that renewed the discussion and raised to that fever pitch is part of the United Nations. How convenient is that? One of the reports listed at the top of the page suggests not all the panel members are scientists and those who voiced objection to the report were deleted from the publication. While that assessment seems a little over the top, the same sort of accusation in reverse was leveled at the Bush Administration earlier this year. So who knows? Again, that is the whole point. What do we really know?

If that question sounds absurd to you in light of recent developments you may want to consider how absurd it would be to act on all the recommendations if there are flaws in the data. Any undertaking this massive and ‘global’ requires more scrutiny than everyday decision making.

Schwarzenegger, Gore add star power to climate meet

By Deborah Zabarenko, Environment Correspondent
Mon Sep 24, 1:10 AM ET

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former Vice President Al Gore are set to join world leaders for a U.N. meeting on Monday aimed at spurring global negotiations on how to cool a warming planet.

Schwarzenegger, a former bodybuilder and movie star who has pushed for environmental reforms in California, acknowledged that rich and poor countries have differing responsibilities when it comes to global warming, but said it is time to stop the blame game.

The report above certainly does not help. Part of the problem is when those with celebrity status fail to measure the undo influence of their public positions on critical issues. To take an absolute position rejecting any alternative viewpoints is dangerous even if combined with altruistic intentions. This may be another case of asking the right questions. Could a former actor and current governor of the state of California and a former VP who lost his only attempt at becoming President have any other motives for their respective stands on global warming? It is no different than asking if major corporations have jumped on the GW bandwagon to launch profitable new businesses that will cater to the environmental panic?

However, if you have not settled on a position for this issue and are more alarmed about potential panic and half-baked solutions than the idea of global warming itself, take heart. The article below aside from announcing some new agreement on HCFC elimination mentions the beginning of that organized effort as 1987. The inefficiency and time lag of all such initiatives is as staggering as the number of issue-based organizations in existence. Whether man-made global warming is a legitimate issue or not, there is better than even odds that solutions won’t be timely in either case.

‘Historic’ deal reached on cutting ozone threats

by Philippe SauvagnarguesSat Sep 22, 10:19 PM ET

Nearly 200 countries have agreed to accelerate the elimination of chemicals that threaten the ozone and exacerbate global warming, the United Nations Environmental Program announced Saturday.

UNEP chief Achim Steiner hailed the agreement by governments to move forward bans on dangerous hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) as a “vital signal” in efforts to slow climate change and welcomed China’s willingness to back the deal.

“It is perhaps the most important breakthrough in an international environment negotiation process for at least five or six years,” Steiner said.

And one can only guess at why President Bush has changed his views on the subject. But the more compelling fact about the article below is there always seems to be a media story about those clamoring for attention pointing their collective fingers at the US.

U.N. climate chief urges U.S. action

By CHARLES J. HANLEY, AP
Sat Sep 22, 1:53 PM ET

The Bush administration has made a “significant” shift on global warming, but still falls short on the “much more aggressive” policies needed to head off its damaging impact, the U.N. climate chief said Saturday.

“It’s very clear that we’re not on track,” Yvo de Boer told The Associated Press.

More than 70 presidents and prime ministers and 80 other national representatives are gathering here for Monday’s U.N. “climate summit.”

To emphasize once more that this post does not accept nor reject the idea of global warming is attached to the final thought expressing the need to subject the global warming issue to strict and continuous scrutiny befitting any other scientific endeavor. This is one of those times when embracing the flat earth or the sun revolving around the earth would not only be embarrassing but entirely counterproductive not to mention a colossal mistake.
