700 Billion New Direction for America

Posted in Money Matters, Bush, wordpress, McCain, GOP, Democrats, Clinton, disclosure, ethics, obama, Pelosi, Reid, Congress on September 30th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

McCain, ObamaSound bites, shifting positions, the search for political cover and more delays from Washington which may prove to be the best medicine for for the so-called financial crisis. One quote from John McCain offered by the press relates to the need for the government to do something.

“This is something that all of us will swallow hard and go forward with,” McCain said on ABC’s “This Week.” “The option of doing nothing is simply not an acceptable option.”

The same goes for a quote from Barack Obama on Face the Nation last Sunday. “My inclination is to support it,” said Obama…”While I look forward to reviewing the language of the legislation, it appears that the tentative deal embraces these principles.” What principles? Oh is doesn’t matter. There are more sound bites and reports to muddy the water. But Obama’s ‘inclination’ is what may best describe Obama, unsure on most things. The Reuters’ source for these quotes had this title, ‘McCain, Obama tentatively support bailout plan.’ .

McCain said he had urged Bush in a morning call to use the Treasury’s Exchange Stabilization Fund to expand the financial services it guarantees beyond money market accounts. He also said he urged Bush to require the Treasury use its roughly trillion-dollar authority to shore up mortgage values. This is a little more to the point and shows McCain wants taxpayer bank deposits, etc., protected and to keep property values from free falling. But the USA Today’s report excerpt is not a quote. It is the paper interpreting what McCain said. The only quotes in the piece say nothing like what is stated above. The McCain quotes offered mostly speak in generalities while the only specifics express a desire to raise FDIC insurance which both McCain and Obama support. Perhaps that is what the title ‘McCain urges Bush action on crisis‘ really means rather than what it suggests and what USA Today interprets from thin air.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is calling for Americans to get behind attempts to salvage a $700 billion rescue plan for the financial sector.

Not to provide any cover for Barack Obama but no where in the brief AP report referenced above is there a quote from Obama saying anything like what is in the excerpt shown here. The MSM is helping the Democratic party in their search for political cover for complicity in the subprime mortgage mess which people are now calling the financial crisis, meltdown or biggest disaster since the Great Depression.

And headlines or titles from both Google and CNN in the next piece also cloud the issues. ‘McCain, Obama: Raise deposit insurance to $250000′ while true, Google, is not the title of the piece at CNN to which your link points.

McCain, Obama: Raise deposit insurance to $250000
CNN - 4 hours ago
(CNN) — The $700 billion economic rescue plan failed in the House of Representatives because people don’t think it will do anything for them, Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain told CNN’s “American Morning…..

And CNN’s title to their report is misleading as well. McCain: I ‘may fail,’ but Congress has to ‘get the job done’ Later in the piece a more complete quote from McCain is presented. “But if I think I can do some good, I’ll do it. I may fail a first or second or third time, but we have to get this job done for America.”

No where have these reports shown what they are trying to claim. That Senator John McCain supports the 700 billion boondoggle.is not accurate. He supports action, he supports, as does Obama, of raising FDIC insurance coverage and what needs to be done to repair the damage done by the subprime mortgage failures.

clintonsHere’s a view for you. Who is responsible for allowing the bank deregulation? The 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act broke down barriers between banks, securities firms, mortgage lenders and insurance companies. That deregulation repealed Great Depression-era bank regulations with the approval of former president Bill Clinton.

The House version of the bill was passed by 205 Republicans and 138 Democrats. The Senate bill was passed on a party line vote with Republicans voting yes and Democrats voting no. President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law.

As posted here earlier Senator Chuck Hagel and Senator Elizabeth Dole, both on the Senate Banking Committee as well as co-sponsor Senator John McCain offered a bill to correct problems with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, etc., and the bill died in their own committee. That was 2005. Senator Dodd is on the committee and has been Chairman since the Democratic majority was won in the 2006 midterms. He gets lots of money from banking interests as well as other members of Congress. How is it that not until the subprime mortgage mess exploded in the markets his chairmanship and the complicity of many other Democrats with Fannie and Freddie has not been front and center in the discussion?

The Community Reinvestment Act while not in itself a root cause to the subprime mess had its effect on the problem. Having banks lend money in areas from whichcash they receive deposits, including low income areas, is a good thing. The Dems signed on as it is right up their alley in terms of their claim to champion the little guy and help the less fortunate. So Fannie and Freddie begin increasing their involvement with low income lending. Over the years money flowed to Dems from Fannie and Freddie, more loans were packaged and as the real estate market bubbled and prices rose dramatically. When the classic good credit market was saturated, deregulated banks, Fannie and Freddie and others expanded whom they would lend to and reduced minimums to cover just about everyone. And the money kept pouring into the Dems wallets. While everyone looked the other way and got fat and happy the bubble burst.

So now who isn’t holding bad paper? Who is too big to fail? How is all this going to be paid for? Can Dems get political cover by convincing the GOP to vote with them?

Is there enough blame to go around? Certainly, there always is. But the Dems are backing the 700 billion boondoggle or as Michelle Malkin calls it, crap sandwich, and most Republicans are not in favor of it. 2/3 of the GOP voted against the bill this week. A surprising number of Dems voted against it. But a boat load of Dems and one third of the GOP in the House voted for it. Barney wants it. Chris wants it. Harry wants it. Nancy wants it. And go figure, GeeDubya wants it.

The Democratic party and their New Direction for America won the majority in Congress in November 2006. Their candidate for President, Barack Obama was firmly connected to ACORN. Beyond voter fraud, ‘community organizing’ and ACORN have a vested interest in the subprime mess. Dems in general have a vested interest in outfits like Fannie and Freddie. Chris Dodd and the Banking Committee had their chance since 2006 and before to head off this problem. And now they want you to do it for them.

So to whom does the majority of the subprime mess blame belong. You guessed it, the Democratic majority in Congress whose New Direction for America had plenty of opportunity to avoid the problem and did nothing.

Is Sen. Dodd More Hero Or Villian In The Current Financial Crisis?

Posted in Money Matters, wordpress, liberal, conspiracy, lobbyist, disclosure, ethics, Congress, Legislation, Dodd on September 29th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

doddIn the midst of near financial hysteria worldwide and certainly in the US one of the players, in the crisis that goes by many names, is Connecticut Senator Christopher Dodd. He may not be getting all the credit he so richly deserves. When the Democrats won back the majority in Congress in the 2006 midterms and Dodd became Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee as well as his party’s claim that they would achieve a New Direction for America, Dodd offered the following quote.

“At the end of my tenure on this committee,” Dodd said in early 2007, “I want it to be said that the safety and soundness of our financial institutions was not weakened on my watch.” So how’s that working for you so far, Senator Dodd? “I’m proud of my chairmanship,” Dodd said in an interview Friday. He said he considered himself a pro-consumer lawmaker and said campaign cash plays no role in his thinking. Can a person with a minimum of average intelligence believe that campaign cash from banking and other financial interests plays no role in a politician’s thinking?

A year and a half later, Dodd acknowledges that the nation’s finances are in an “economic maelstrom.” Even for a politician, denying the financial meltdown caused by unscrupulous members of both the private and public sector is beyond absurd. Just the three quotes from Dodd presented so far raises the question of how much money did Senator Dodd receive while heading the banking committee and before?

During the past 20 years, PACs and employees of finance-related firms have contributed more than $13 million to Dodd’s election efforts, including nearly $6 million in the past two years. Among members of Congress, only leading presidential candidates — Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John McCain and John Kerry — have collected more money from the sector.

cashDodd has received more money from the donors in the financial sector than Presidential candidates! Hillary Clinton and John Kerry may not be an issue in this based on their failed attempts for the White House. John McCain is at least on record in 2005 for supporting S. 190 to provide increased oversight, etc., in the housing market. The bill was sponsored by Chuck Hagel and co-sponsored by Elizabeth Dole and John McCain but apparently died in committee on which Dodd, Hagel and Dole serve. And since then Dodd became Chairman. Obama claims to have supported such legislation but no evidence was found before publishing this post.

Dodd claims to have sounded the alarm on the meltdown but that was in 2007 when it was already underway. Sort of like setting the house on fire and then calling the Fire Dept. So how does one, in good conscience, take massive amounts of campaign contributions from financial interests, claim it does not influence your decisions and in addition claim you warned people about the problem but not until it was too late while the committee you chair did little or nothing to avoid the problem?

While preparing this post something that occurs from time to time happened again. But this time it seemed a little strange and suggested someone had second thoughts about raising the bar on this issue. An interesting hit returned on a Google search found the source announcing the content had been removed from their database and was not available for viewing or purchase. Thanks to the cache at Google it is presented here as found for readers to consider.

Is Sen. Dodd More Hero Or Villian In The Current Financial Crisis?
Published on 9/28/2008

THE ISSUE

As chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Sen. Christopher J. Dodd has played a lead role in working to develop a compromise bill that would provide relief to the troubled investment industry, while also providing more protections to homeowners facing foreclosure. He has been a regular fixture on the news networks. When this section went to print Friday, the relief package, estimated at $700 billion, was still being debated. THE DEBATE

Sen. Dodd’s critics, however, contend he played a big role in creating the problem that he is now working to solve with taxpayer money. Dodd’s committee should have been reining in Freddie Mae and Freddie Mac nearly two years ago when he became chairman, say the critics. And they note the finance, insurance and real estate industries gave nearly $6 million toward his failed run for the presidency.

THE QUESTION

So how do you see Sen. Dodd? Have his attempts to provide relief to struggling homeowners been heroic or his failure to control the financial giants sooner villainous? Or has he been both?

The question of the week is: Has Sen. Dodd been more hero or villain in the current financial crisis?

Feel free to comment on the above since it appears it won’t be happening at the original source. It could cause one to wonder why it was removed.

Rabbis hail Ahmadinejad’s NY visit

Posted in Israel, Terrorism, Lebanon, Hezbollah, Iraq, war, wordpress, Religion, syria, Afghanistan, U.N., Iran, Hamas, Foreign Affairs, Saudi Arabia on September 28th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

It is not uncommon to find an analysis of the foreign policy differences between John McCain and Barack Obama. One such analysis below from down under agrees with the view from this blog and is used here to emphasize that point. Senator John McCain is in a much better position to deal with Iran than Barack Obama. Among all the issues that face the US now and will face the next President very soon, Iran and their pursuit of nuclear capabilities as well as the threats against Israel, the rest of the Middle East and the world in general ranks as critiical. So think about the other events related to Iran presented below and their historical implications.

Iran test candidates

Iran NukesIn the end the result was much closer than anticipated, with most political pundits calling it tie. But on the crucial issue of Iran, Senator McCain struck a more convincing tone, giving him the edge on this most pressing of security issues. What to do about Iran’s nuclear weapons program will be one of the most difficult challenges to face the next occupant of the White House. A nuclear-armed Iran would spark an atomic arms race in the Middle East, threaten the world’s oil supplies and embolden Iran-sponsored extremist groups such as Hezbollah.

Senator Obama’s policy on Iran has been marked by missteps, most notably his offer to negotiate directly with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad without preconditions. In Saturday’s debate he backtracked on this position, saying he was no longer so sure. But he stuck to his belief that direct diplomacy would give the US more credibility to press for tougher sanctions. Senator McCain was more forthright, ruling out talks with Mr Ahmadinejad and reiterating his opposition to giving ground in any way that might legitimise the Iranian leader’s illegal behaviour.

At first glance, the title from an article in the Tehran Times suggested someone had lost their mind or this was simply propaganda from Iran.

Rabbis hail Ahmadinejad’s NY visit

A group of American rabbis welcome Iran’s President Mahmud Ahmadinejad’s visit to New York in a move aimed at countering an anti-Iran protest.

Iran promotes peace and respects Judaism, spokesman of Neturei Karta International (Jews United Against Zionism) Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss said in a statement issued on the eve of President Ahmadinejad’s visit to New York.

This is while a pro-Israeli group called the Conference of Presidents of Major American Organizations has made efforts to organize a rally in front of the UN headquarters on Sunday to protest President Mahmud Ahmadinejad’s arrival in the U.S..

Right out of the blocks the claim that Iran ‘promotes peace and respects Judaism’ sends the BS meter off the charts. How is advocating the destruction of Israel promoting peace and respecting Judaism? The additional strange suggestion from the piece indicating Rabbis on both sides of the Iranian controversy. The report offered below also presents a combination of expected and unexpected responses to Iran.

A coalition of U.S. religious groups exchanged views with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at a New York hotel.

The dialogue Thursday, sponsored by Mennonite, Quaker and other religious groups that press for world peace, had been sharply criticized by Jewish groups for allegedly legitimating the Iranian president’s anti-Semitic rhetoric and his oppression of religious minorities in Iran.

Hitler in Time magazineExpected: Jewish groups criticizing others for meeting with the Iranian President. Unexpected: other religious groups meeting with the Iranian President. While one might not reasonably expect everyone to hold the same opinion on Iran on every issue, recognizing Ahmadinejad’s call for the destruction of Israel and therefore condemning the Iranian Preisdent and refusing to meet with him should be SOP for religious groups as well as political leaders. Since Ahmadinejad has been compared to Hitler it is not a stretch to view some recent events as similar to the coddling manner by which many also treated Hitler during his rise to power in Germany. And we all know what happened then.

And then a surprise from the WSJ that would seem more appropriately located in the confines of the NYT based on past history. A reporter’s account of an invite and dinner with Ahmadinejad extended to those of Iranian heritage.

Inside Iran, sentiments are divided over him. The ultra conservatives praise his populist demeanor while others criticize him for his government’s economic policies that have contributed to the rise of unemployment and a 25% inflation rate, despite a country swimming in cash from soaring oil prices.

At the dinner party in New York, criticism of Mr. Ahmadinejad appeared to have been brushed aside and replaced with fervent nationalistic pride. Both the host and the attendees appeared to cling to the one strong, if only, tie: being Iranian.

And the same mixed reactions are of course not dead at the United Nations either.

Sound familiar? First there is tough talk from those in the UN and the IAEA that Iran is dangerous and pursuing nukes (or WMD) and that they are ignoring the United Nations and members that are demanding they cease and desist.

UN Nuclear Agency Accuses Iran of Blocking Investigation

September 15, 2008
The United Nations nuclear agency is accusing Iran of blocking a U.N. investigation into allegations that Tehran tried to make nuclear weapons.

The UN then speaks of enforcing sanctions and possibly announcing more to which Ahmadinejad promptly flips them off.

Iran’s Ahmadinejad Dismisses Sanction Talk as Weak

September 18, 2008
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has dismissed talk of new sanctions over Iran’s disputed nuclear work as a sign of weakness by those making the threat.

And about a week later the Iranian President struts his stuff at the UN and essentially tells them to go pound sand

Iran’s Ahmadinejad Denounces ‘Bullying Powers’ in UN Address

Sept 26, 2008
The Iranian leader sounded a defiant tone at the United Nations, where preliminary consultations have been held on a possible fourth sanctions resolutions against Tehran in the Security Council because of its refusal to halt uranium enrichment.

Sounds like the UN responded with tougher sanctions after being bad mouthed by Iran.

Major Powers Agree on New UN Resolution on Iran

Sept 26, 2008
Putting aside differences over Georgia, the United States and Russia joined other major powers Friday in endorsing a new draft U.N. Security Council resolution calling on Iran to comply with international demands to halt its uranium enrichment program. The draft, expected to be approved by the full council next week, reaffirms existing U.N. sanctions against Iran but contains no new ones.

While the previous report indicates there were no new sanctions, the title and story below drive home the point.

Iran Avoids New Sanctions in Security Council Vote

By Margaret Besheer
27 September 2008

The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution ordering Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program — but the council did not impose any new sanctions.

And on top of all that comes a recent addition to the shameful actions of some Iranian citizens.

Hitler YouthYoung Iranians Release Book Caricaturing The Holocaust

Sunday, September 28, 2008

TEHRAN, Sept. 27 — Iranian students have released a book containing cartoons of the Holocaust, including some depicting hospitalized Jews on respiratory machines attached to canisters of Zyklon B, the gas used to exterminate Jews during World War II.

The students, members of a state militia, unveiled “Holocaust” in Tehran’s Palestine Square on Friday in the presence of Education Minister Ali Reza Ali-Ahmadi, during annual demonstrations calling for the retreat of “Zionists” from “occupied Palestine.”

Below is an excerpt of an account of the Iranian President’s stand on Israel.

Ahmadinejad: Destroy Israel, End Crisis

Thursday, August 3, 2006; 10:49 AM

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Thursday the solution to the Middle East crisis is to destroy Israel. In a speech during an emergency meeting of Muslim leaders, Ahmadinejad also called for an immediate halt to fighting in Lebanon between Israel and the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah.

“Although the main solution is for the elimination of the Zionist regime, at this stage an immediate cease-fire must be implemented,” he said.

Ahmadinejad, who has drawn international condemnation with previous calls for Israel to be wiped off the map, said the Middle East would be better off “without the existence of the Zionist regime.”

Israel “is an illegitimate regime, there is no legal basis for its existence,” he said.

There are enough examples in this post to reveal nearly every nation, organization or group is complicit in allowing the insanity that is Ahmadinejad to persist. Many are quick to condemn his behavior but few, especially the United Nations, are prepared to support that condemnation with action. This includes other Arab states who publicly support peace in the Middle East but whose actions offer little evidence that this is anything more than posturing.

It has been said that during the first Presidential debate John McCain was the only adult in the room. That would be a plus since Ahamdinejad contends since the US has nukes Iran should be able to also. An adult would handle that like any other lame argument from an unruly child and not allow the stupidity to continue. Whereas Barack Obama would simply say ‘no’ without follow up action like the fine parents who let their children raise hell in public to the disdain of others wishing the offending parent(s) knew how to raise children.

But of course that is an absurd analogy on the state of affairs with Iran equal to the inept response of world leaders to the very real threat of the stated goals of Iran.

Obama’s K Street Slight of Hand and More

Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Biden, Democrats, liberal, lobbyist, disclosure, ethics, obama, Opinion on September 28th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

obamaThe public funding of campaigns will not be the only campaign pledge that Barack Obama abandons. Never mind the connections to William Ayers, Rev Wright or Tony Rezko since many of you have already. From pandering to the antiwar Dems along with his colleagues in the Presidential primary to a newer surrender or defeat or withdrawal strategy stuck on 16 months, the list continues to grow.

In the first Presidential debate Barack Obama redefined his flawed foreign policy of direct talks with rogue nations like Iran by redefining ‘preconditions’ as ‘preparations’ and claiming McCain’s long time friend and advisor, Henry Kissinger, agreed with him which has been since been shown to be flat wrong. His additional error to appear genuinely moved by the receipt of ‘the bracelet’ from the mother of a fallen soldier can be dismissed by his failure to even remember the soldier’s name.

While abandoning a pledge to use public financing in his campaign may pale in comparison to other Obama flaws, it demonstrates the real ambition of Barack Obama. Win at any cost and if that means raising money by any means necessary, so be it. As stated below, lobbyists are creative and will have no trouble peddling their agendas with Barack Obama if he is in the White House.

Obama’s Lunch Money

Like money, such influence always finds a way in Washington, as Mr. Obama well knows. In June, he wriggled out of an early promise to accept campaign spending limits, becoming the first candidate since the laws were passed in the 1970s not to take public funds for the general election. Mr. Obama supported these rules right up until the minute he didn’t, once it became clear that he’d be giving up his fund-raising advantage over John McCain. Lobbyists are creative people too, and in an Obama Administration they won’t have more trouble than they do now eluding the latest lobbying nannies.

Wasn’t it none other than the Messiah, Senator Barack Obama who criticized Senator John McCain for having lobbyist connections on his campaign staff? Wasn’t it Barack Obama who said things have to change in Washington and the lobbyists can no longer be allowed to control the nation’s capitol? So you have to ask at least one question about Barack Obama and lobbyists. If Obama has three dozen lobbyist lawyers on his fund raising staff and it is said a great deal of his campaign donations come from individual donors, could these donors be employees of companies who pay lobbyists to run Washington? Maybe Mr Innocent is not so innocent.

Obama tied to lobbyists, but boasts of not taking money

By Ken Dilanian, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — Barack Obama often boasts he is “the only candidate who isn’t taking a dime from Washington lobbyists,” yet his fundraising team includes 38 members of law firms that were paid $138 million last year to lobby the federal government, records show.

Ah yes, the ‘Washington Democratic establishment’ and a ’stealthy operation’ on K Street are just the ticket for Obama. Whether he is taking lobbyist money right now or not, the quiet assembly of a network of top politicians and lobbyists, the marriage made in hell, will serve him well if elected. When voters have long forgotten all his abandoned principles spoken of and broken during the campaign, life will go on with business as usual in Washington. That’s a nightmare we could all do without. A far left Democratic politician with an unlimited wallet to pursue his socialist agenda and push America closer to the abyss.

cashObama’s K Street project

Williams is actively building support for Obama among lobbyists and the corporate clients they represent. While other Obama supporters have described him as a leading activist, Williams demurs: “I wouldn’t want to put my position as a spearhead.” He acknowledges that the gains Obama is making among Washington’s Democratic establishment are hard to see because Obama’s K Street supporters have kept a low profile. As a result, Obama’s K Street network is a stealthy operation.

Just like the community organizing affiliation with the corrupt and voter fraud filled ACORN and the Annenberg project ripoff of Obama and Ayers for over 100 million dollars, the Democratic party nominee for President has used lobbyists in his state legislative experience as well as ‘granting’ money to former volunteers that are now under investigation. How does the story below bode for an Obama health care initiative otherwise known as socialized medicine run by the government and your tax dollars?

In Illinois, Obama dealt with lobbyists

The wrangling over the healthcare measure, which narrowly passed and became law in 2004, illustrates how Obama, during his eight years in the Illinois Senate, was able to shepherd major legislation by negotiating competing interests in Springfield, the state capital. But it also shows how Obama’s own experience in lawmaking involved dealings with the kinds of lobbyists and special interests he now demonizes on the campaign trail.

A hundred grand to a former campaign volunteer who spread some to his wife and the project never saw the light of day. Perhaps the investigation will but it is doubtful what with a Democratic Attorney General investigating it and already saying Obama providing the grant is not part of the case.

Obama grant being probed

A $100,000 state grant for a botanic garden in Englewood that then-state Sen. Barack Obama awarded in 2001 to a group headed by a onetime campaign volunteer is now under investigation by the Illinois attorney general amid new questions, prompted by Chicago Sun-Times….

As a parting note, what about all those Obama earmarks and the fact that John McCain’s earmarks are zero? Folks, the information is out there, you just have to look for it as the MSM will not help you. (Well, not much)

Legendary U.S. actor Paul Newman has died of cancer at the age of 83.

Newman appeared in over 50 films in a career spanning six decades. He was nominated for the Academy Award 10 times, and won the best actor Oscar for his role in the 1986 movie “The Color of Money.”

Often cast as rebellious but sympathetic characters, the versatile actor played major roles in films, including “Hud,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Sting,” and “Cool Hand Luke.”

Newman married another movie star, Joanne Woodward, in 1958, around the time the two appeared together in the movie “The Long Hot Summer.”

In 1982, on a whim, Newman founded a food company called Newman’s Own, which has generated some $250 million in profits - all of which was donated to charity.

Lefties Concede Debate to McCain

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, McCain, GOP, Democrats, News Media, obama, Opinion on September 27th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

McCain, ObamaChris Cillizza of the Washington Post described McCain as appearing in this debate better than any previous ones. A command of the subject matter and the stage is about as good a critique as McCain’s camp might expect from the MSM. Cillizza also points to the discussion on preconditions as McCain’s strongest moment for hitting Obama on misunderstanding Kissinger. The earlier post from this blog reviewing that point of the debate mentioned Obama’s flaw at redefining ‘preconditions’ as merely ‘preparation’.’ And that the point on Kissinger was likely to bite someone in the backside. Cillizza places the bite on Obama.

He goes on to say Obama’s objective was to link McCain to Bush but suggested many may remember McCain as the one who opposed Bush in the 2000 campaign. While this report from WaPo stops short of declaring a clear winner it obviously gives the lion’s share of positive points to John McCain.

Jonathan Last from the Weekly Standard has a report entitled ‘Fight Night, Scoring Obama-McCain Round by Round’ in which he scores the bout not as a knockout or TKO but a decision giving McCain victory in seven out of eight rounds.

My scorecard says that McCain won the night 7-1, which frankly surprises me. On paper that looks like a rout, but McCain didn’t seem that dominant as it was happening. Certainly there was nothing in the debate that Obama will worry about as having been a big blow. I saw McCain winning the debate pretty handily, but I doubt he scored any larger strategic victory.

LeftiesAt least for the view from this blog a major surprise comes from Josh Marshall at TPM and his account of the debate. WaPo ,above, being fairly even handed and a review from the Weekly Standard giving a weak nod to McCain even with a 7 to 1 score are not ‘wow’ reviews. But cringing before the expected acid bath from lefty Josh Marshall finds the following opening to his report.

My take on this debate was that both candidates made their basic arguments clearly. They stuck to the points they’re making on the campaign trail. Neither of these guys are powerful debaters but both held up well. I didn’t see many real gaffes or mistakes.

I said before the debate started that we should expect some outside the box, over the top antics from McCain. But that didn’t really turn out to be true.

Through most of the debate — as I was live-blogging — I was thinking, Hmm, this is pretty much a draw, about what you’d expect with one person arguing McCain’s agenda and another arguing Obama’s. In that sense, I thought it was largely a tie. But McCain’s whole campaign is based on his supposed superior knowledge and judgment on foreign policy. So I think that’s a problem for McCain.

The mild criticism from Marshall translates into victory for McCain. When has a liberal ever been so non-combative in framing a take on a political event between a Democrat and a Republican. Actually it may be an incredible victory for McCain as Marshall really has nothing over the top impressive he can hang on Obama. But perhaps that was expected since most people agreed McCain is stronger in debates while Obama is addicted to a prompter. That may explain the thus far muted response from the left not wanting to concede that Obama’s only positive was not creating a major gaffe beyond the ‘preconditions’ weakness.

An equally surprising analysis comes from NRO (National Review Online) and Jim Geraghty. Opening with everyone probably thought ‘their guy’ won. And then following with a blend of praise and criticism on several points for each candidate. His suggestion to Obama was to use more of the personal story stuff to woo voters as the type of thing that worked for him in the past. A similar comment was shared on the PBS post game right after the debate. And once again McCain is credited for having the skill and experience to handle the job especially in light of the debate’s principle topics for the evening. This is just one more report that is convincing in its assessment. While no one seems to be handing either side a decisive victory with accolades, every one mentions McCain having a command of the topics and the debate. So why isn’t that a big victory? Perhaps cuz everyone knew it from before the debate.

Both Chuck Todd at NBC and Noam Scheiber from The New Republic essentially echoed sentiment like the other reports except Scheiber noted Obama seemed to lay down rather than compete when McCain scored his biggest points. That may be more telling on his ability, or lack of same, to be President. It gives more significance to one of McCain’s remarks that Obama would simply say ‘no’ if meeting with Ahmadinejad while he threatens to destroy Israel. While it seemed at first as simply a way of making light of Obama’s misconceptions of what is required while engaged in foreign policy, viewers may have missed this salient point. Obama may really possess some childish or foolish notions about handling matters of state far more dangerous than the socialist or communist ideals he has been tagged with during the campaign.

LeftiesWhile from the left TPM offered a tame response to the debate as cited above, Slate on the other hand seems precariously near a meltdown. Right out of the gate they are conceding victory to McCain and almost bashing Obama for wimping out on them. Thanks to Slate for providing a more typical lefty response. They slam Obama for not using words like ‘we’ or ‘us’ when Obama spoke of the middle class. Hey dumb ass, check Obama’s income disclosure. He does not qualify economically as ‘middle class.’ He would be hammered in at least the conservative press for being a hypocrite if he characterized himself as middle class with a seven figure income.

But the part you can really like is the report from Slate also complained Obama did not do enough pointing out the ‘what a nightmare the last six years have been.’ The last SIX YEARS! Gee Wally, what happened to the first two years of the Bush Administration in the view from the left. Has the kook fringe mania been prolonged to the point they are all suffering from a mental breakdown? All that from none other than Mickey Kaus and even he gives Mccain the nod. Whining that he wanted ‘game changing’ from his Messiah and did not get it. That is not the only thing Kaus doesn’t get.

thinkThe post game polls, other reviews not mentioned here and on and on leads this blog to hold with the initial reaction that this debate will do little to influence the campaign except to say that the pundits on the left are conceding victory to McCain and that is perhaps his biggest gain from the debate aside from the fact that Obama did look the rookie. So you can place a seasoned Senator in the White House and understand his positives will outweigh his negatives while leading this country or acquiesce to the flawed political ambition of a candidate with nothing more than an academic approach to understanding the role of President of the United States. It is your choice. It is our future. Let’s not mess this one up. 2008 for McCain and 2012 or 16 for Obama is a safer bet than the big risk of choosing a rookie now. While this blog would never vote for Obama, those of you who would may want to consider waiting until he may be ready. If he cannot maintain a presence in politics until the next Presidential election it will be proof enough he was never Presidential material. And if he really is Presidential material waiting four more years or so is no great risk. Certainly not as great as electing him now and having history prove the theory to be wrong. Think about it.

McCain/Obama 2008 Debate, Round One

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, McCain, GOP, Democrats, obama, Opinion on September 27th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

2008 debate
Not being much of a surprise the first Presidential debate of 2008 was something of a disappointment. If you listened to the post game report on PBS a comment suggesting most debates are a collection of sound bites or ‘a joint new conference’ with perhaps one candidate thumping the other leaving a memorable moment, the opinion was this debate was different. The two candidates stayed on the issues. That would be the upside but the problem is we’ve heard it all before. So except for those who are only now starting to pay attention it was merely an extension of the campaign ads. Which one could add had the same number of discrepancies between the opposing camps. Meaning each side contends the other side misrepresents their stand on the issues, etc. So what’s new?

If the polls change at all based on this evening’s debate this blog will view it as a surprise. Neither candidate appeared to offer anything new or remarkable or catch the other off guard by any significant measure. Obama tried to redefine preconditions as preparation which was lame. McCain’s strong expression that his advisor by the name of Henry Kissinger was not for talks with rogue nations without preconditions may come back to bite someone in the backside. Obama did not present a convincing argument about his moratorium on earmarks and Senator McCain performed similarly on the significance of earmarks.

If McCain had an upper hand it was on national security and defense which was central to the debate format for the evening. For Obama to mention his VP choice as if that was an answer for his lacking on those issues only served to emphasize McCain’s advantage in that respect. You could give Obama the upper hand on matters of economics if you believe what he said. Certainly he cannot pursue his spending agenda and provide meaningful tax cuts at the same time. But he hinted his energy policy would be delayed as a result of the bailout proposal under consideration in DC if it is enacted. The debate may have raised more questions than it answered but it surely did nothing to shake up the campaign.

There is no point for a big post on this topic as the debate provided little to talk about that matters. No major gaffes by either candidate and no noticeable advantage going to either side. We’ll just have to wait for some other event to break the statistical tie or the results after November 4.

Okay, so for whom are you voting?

Money Meltdown: What’s the Hurry?

Posted in Money Matters, Bush, wordpress, Politics, GOP, Democrats, News Media, Congress, Business on September 27th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

Bush, Reid, PelosiWhether intended or not several article titles at the Hill Dot Com may sum up the status on Washington’s efforts to do whatever they will regarding the financial troubles of late. The first title suggests Obama gave the GOP ‘an opening’ for movement on the bailout and that they might take it. But the second and third titles report Harry Reid says Congress will be in session next week and the White House hopes for a deal by Monday.

So what does that tell you? Today Washington is no closer to fixing the mess than they were at the beginning of the week. So will the Presidential debate go on as schedules this evening. Various broadcast schedules around the planet suggest the TV networks are counting on it.

Then there is the Hill’s Congress blog that adds some entertainment to the day. By virtue of chronological order a Dems Congressman says we need to stop overpaying Wall Street followed by a GOP Congressman saying we need to clean things up in Washington. Does it get any more pointless than that? Yes, it does. In the midst of several national issues a Dems Congressman from TN reminds us their farmers have no water for crops. Not that his stated concern is unimportant but a regional farming issue that is not uncommon as an obstacle to successful farming seems a bit out of place at least this week.

Party AnimalsThen there is a Republican from Congress echoing a typical sentiment directed toward the Iranian thug President and a need other nations to interrupt his mission. After that at least the sequence of bloggers turn the attention to finance. One asks how the bailout will affect Americans and the other reviews the crisis. Okay, we don’t have a bailout yet so there would be some serious guessing going on there and the review touches on a more popular theme that ‘crony’ capitalism is the root of all evil in the meltdown and how checking history could keep us from repeating this in the future. To that is humbly offered this point. The S&L Crisis of the 80’s and the current financial failures such as AIG, etc., are only about 20 years removed from each other. So what are the odds under any circumstance that we will not see this again?

An article from The Economist may offer one of the more reasoned views on the topic:

Experience, at home and abroad, is a poor guide. In past episodes authorities have typically not committed public money to their financial systems until bank failures and insolvency have become widespread. The first wave of savings-and-loan failures came in the early 1980s; the Resolution Trust Corporation was not created to dispose of their assets until 1989. Japan’s banks began to fail in 1991, but a mechanism for taking over large, insolvent banks was not set up until 1998. Mr Paulson and Mr Bernanke are attempting to prevent the crisis from reaching that stage. “The firms we’re dealing with now are not necessarily failing, but they are contracting, they are deleveraging,” Mr Bernanke told Congress. They are unable to raise capital and are refusing to lend, and that, he said, is squeezing the economy.

One risk with such a pre-emptive bail-out is that to congressmen the benefits are hypothetical whereas the fiscal and political costs, five weeks before an election, are all too real. In polls voters waver between opposition and support depending on how the question is asked.

Yes, you are encouraged to read the rest.

Obama, ACORN, Voter Fraud and a Senate Hearing

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Biden, disclosure, ethics, Law, Justice, obama, Congress on September 26th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

scales of justiceBelow is just a sampling of the written testimony of James Terry, Certified Public Advocate, Consumer Rights League before the US House Judiciary Committee’s long overdue investigation into voting fraud. The Joint Hearing on Federal, State and Local efforts to Prepare for the General 2008 Election is a little late to the party with the election almost here. But late may be better than never unless the fraudsters have their way and nothing comes of it.

Yes, there is ACORN, Obama and all the usual suspects for voter fraud in the United States. Read on or click anywhere on the highlighted text to go to the Senate’s Adobe Acrobat Reader (pdf) file. Other hearing information is available at the following link Committee on the Judiciary, Hearing Information

Project Vote and the political operative organization known as Citizens Services Inc. are wholly owned subsidiaries of the ACORN web of organizations. There should be no distinction between crimes or alleged crimes perpetrated by personnel from Project Vote and those from ACORN.

Comments the Consumers Rights League has received from current and past ACORN employees demonstrates that command and control of ACORN’s political operations is based in its national headquarters. While many view voter registration problems in different states as a series of random events, it is important that observers not lose sight of the fact that ACORN is a giant corporation potentially responsible for massive fraud across the United States.

A careful observer will note a ten-year record of voter registration fraud that spans the contiguous United States. Ten years and five election cycles is not a series of mistakes; it is a pattern.

Ten years ago, an Arkansas contractor hired by ACORN’s non-profit affiliate Project Vote was arrested for falsifying hundreds of voter registration cards. In the last few election cycles the problem has spiked dramatically.

. In 2003, ACORN employees in Missouri turned in more than a thousand suspicious voter registration cards, with one woman saying a card was turned in under the name of her infant.

. Following Colorado’s 2004 election, two ex-ACORN employees were convicted of perjury for submitting false voter registration forms6; one ex-ACORN employee admitted to registering her friends 40 times.

. In 2004, police arrested a former ACORN employee who had more than 300 completed voter registration cards in the trunk of his car, many of which had not been turned in within the legal time limit.

. In 2005, Virginia authorities found that of a sample of Project Votegathered registrations, 83% were rejected for using false or questionable information.

. In 2007, King County, Washington officials announced the indictment of seven workers ACORN had hired to register voters, calling the episode the “worst case of voter registration fraud in the history of the state.”10 At least three of those individuals have pleaded guilty and ACORN was forced to pay a $25,000 settlement.

. In April 2008, federal prosecutors announced guilty pleas for federal election fraud by eight former ACORN employees in Missouri, based on their activities in the 2006 election. They submitted false addresses and names, as well as forged signatures. At least one former ACORN employee was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

obamaFor those of you who do not believe Barack Obama is guilty of anything it is time you woke up and smelled the coffee. Open your eyes and look around. The evidence is all around you. Certainly you are smart enough to connect the dots on Mr Community Organizer, aka ACORN accomplice, who also conspired with William Ayers to rip off over 100 million with the Annenberg project in Chicago. You can also check out the notes from the testimony above regarding $800K to his campaign war chest and what it represents. There is also the campaign fundraising courtesy of Tony Rezko and lesser known associates to both the Obama and Biden campaigns. What trouble would anyone have seeing this for what it is…….the commission of a massive fraud with ties to Barack Obama.
