2008 Campaign: Leaked Strategy or Strategic Leak?
The Boston Globe ‘obtained’ strategy documents from the Romney campaign and the New York Daily News ‘leaked’ documents from the Giuliani campaign. Are these two newspapers assisting the two campaign’s real strategies? It is not difficult to imagine that anyone’s campaign staff would be careless enough to lose documents or even allow them to be taken intentionally. What a good way to test the water. Romney’s campaign declined to confirm authenticity of the documents. One report from the Giuliani camp suggested their ‘leak’ was notes from a staffer and not official campaign documents.

Are the newspapers really that stupid? Probably not, as they simply state both campaign’s response to the documents and that’s that. An easy way to publish an eye-catching headline and a meaningless report. Everyone is complicit and who cares anyhow. The campaigns get the public to respond to the leaks and the information in them and have deniability provided by the press reports. The newspapers get a cheap story to attract interest at the newsstand. And as usual everyone involved is trying to hose the public.
Although Giuliani and McCain lead in the polls, we all know it is early yet. Romney has received some mild criticism and is in third or fourth depending on the poll you read. The other candidate is not a candidate. Newt Gingrich is in third in some polls and has stated he will decide on running later in the year. Smart move to save money, time and aggravation of exposing any weakness too early. When you’re leading you have a target on your back and Giuliani and McCain may suffer from their histories more than Gingrich or Romney. And between these two, Romney may have the least to worry about.
