Democratic Majority’s Failing Agenda

On visits to a few blogs, I commented on posts about the threat of the gun control issue being raised again. I wrote at one that even Harry Reid was backing off from such talk. My opinion was there is too much on the table already in terms of risky political positions and neither party would be interested in bringing more to the campaign. Well since the statement below from Senator Harry Reid, more reports support my assessment. Am I bragging about this? Absolutely not. The real reason to share this with you is renewed optimism. I’ll get around to explaining that.

More Gun Control? Don’t Hold Your Breath

WASHINGTON, April 17, 2007(AP) After the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid cautioned Tuesday against a “rush to judgment” on stricter gun control.

A leading House supporter of restrictions on firearms conceded passage of legislation would be difficult.

And there is more evidence today in addition to the Reid concession above. I hate to repeat myself but this time it is more enjoyable. After all the Democrat hoopla following the midterm elections a wait and see attitude was fair even if one was not optimistic that the Dems would say anything good or do what they say. The 100 hour agenda was a bunch of snake oil selling. Only the House Page Board bill of the touted agenda has been enacted and now the most important issue for Congress, on Congress, is ethics and they are faltering on that afraid of outside scrutiny.

As the Democratic party continues its slow slide into oblivion we may have much to rejoice but it is too early to get optimistic that what is now really only left fringe politics, aka the Democratic party, will collapse this soon. But it is good to see things heading the direction they are. Like the following report that adds to the one above.

Caution Is Position No. 1 for Reid and Pelosi on Abortion and Gun Control Issues
By JAKE TAPPER
WASHINGTON - April 18, 2007 — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., took no position on two of the hottest social issues in America today — guns and abortion — in a week when those subjects were brought before the public in quite compelling ways.

This is more proof that even Nancy Pelosi may have come up for air. Gun control and abortion have the Dems feeling a little weak in the knees. And the reason I referred to the Dems as being controlled by the left fringe is her obvious mistakes involving herself in diplomatic affairs masked as just a Congressional visit as an attempt to deflect criticism. But relying on anti-war sentiment to justify not supporting the troops or the rest of this country, including the President, in time of war is absolutely wrong. Or if you are going to do it, speak privately rather than have your words give aid and comfort to the enemy. And on that note, the next report is the best of all. It demonstrates that the Democratic failure as a majority in Congress may be coming sooner than expected.

Democrats Would Make Iraq Timetable in Bill ‘Advisory’

Congressional Democratic leaders are moving to make their proposed timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq “advisory” as they seek to reconcile two versions of war spending legislation into a single bill that they plan to pass next week, according to several House members.

The compromise language would keep the deadlines included in the original House bill but make them nonbinding, as the Senate version did, and would allow President Bush to waive troop-readiness standards, lawmakers said. Bush has vowed to veto legislation with timetables in it, calling it a schedule of surrender, but Democrats hope to show that they are being flexible and the president rigid by softening the terms. The compromises may cost Democrats votes among antiwar liberals, but they hope to pick up some Republicans.

ThinkingFirst the Dems denied it was not ‘cut and run’ but the will of the people based on the midterm election results. To make the assumption that every one who voted was in favor of surrender is absurd. Just as it would be absurd to think all the voters agreed on any one subject. Then like a hot potato, the legislation was passed around for members of both parties could not do the right thing based on politics. Then Pelosi and Reid demanded the President agree with them and have a meeting. Then they insulted the President when he refused to meet. Next, miraculously the President agreed to meet. I suspect some quiet negotiation took place with the Dems saying ‘please’. Now they have talked and the the cut and run will be advisory to save face and the President’s veto pen stands ready still.

Just as sportscasters say, ‘ the momentum has definitely shifted after the last couple of scores’. The public could even let the Dems save face by saying they’re coming to their senses and realized the error of their ways along with a few questionable Republicans up for re-election in 2008. But then why take the fun out of it. The upside for the Dems is I won’t lean any further to the right if they pull their heads out and stay straight. But then only time will tell.
