McDermott, Boehner and Ethics

Rep Jim McDermottCongressman Jim McDermott refers to President Bush as ‘out of touch and out of control’ on April 26 and loses an appeal where the court ruled ‘that he improperly made public an illegally recorded telephone conversation.’ on May 1st. Separate from any discussion of legal issues, what about simple manners, etiquette or common sense and acceptable behavior? Describing Congressman McDermott as ‘ethically challenged’ is reasonable and for another reason than just these two events as noted by Perri at Perri Nelson’s Website.

It is ironic however, that the recorded conversation that is the subject of the court case is of high ranking Republicans discussing ethics allegations, McDermott was a member of the House Ethics Committee when he released the recording to the press and again McDermott’s personal ethics are in question due to the content of this post at The Hill’s Congress Blog.

Since it is never easy to determine the real intentions of any politician’s decisions, it is equally reasonable to suspect McDermott voted for the flawed ‘Iraq bill’ merely as the result of party politics and published the blog post to assert the will of a party is the ‘will of a nation.’ Politics being what it is, simply casting your vote and saying nothing would be more honest and ethical than attempting to spin your intentions with hyperbole designed to insult the President and fool the public.

Iraq Bill Shows President Is Out of Touch and Out of Control

(Rep. Jim McDermott)
April 26th, 2007
The Iraq bill has the weight of a feather but I supported it because sometimes the weight of a feather can support the resolve of a nation. The legislation is very weak on a date to get our soldiers out of Iraq, but it provoked so many attacks from the White House that its real value may be in proving to the American people that the President is out of touch and out of control.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Jim McDermott was dealt a potentially crippling blow Tuesday when a federal appeals court ruled that he improperly made public an illegally recorded telephone conversation involving senior House Republicans.

In a 5-4 ruling, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia discarded McDermott’s claim that he was simply exercising his First Amendment right by turning over the tape 10 years ago to reporters for The New York Times and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
