Corporate Lawyers and Illegal Immigration

Illegal ImmigrationNo discussion of illegal immigration would be complete without the lawyers getting involved. In the private sector there is the immigration version of the personal injury ambulance chaser. A little time searching the net for bulletin boards or chat areas uncovers a massive network of immigration attorneys advertising for immigrant dollars. Many of these boards feature illegal immigrants or visa violators seeking an out to their law breaking practices. But the following excerpt and link is from the other attorneys. The general counsel for corporations and other businesses are served by at least one consulting group with a take on immigration enforcement.

GCs Prepare for Increased Immigration Law Enforcement

By Jen Woods
Companies that employ illegal immigrants are increasingly facing fines and criminal charges. Last year, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the Secure Border Initiative, which calls for “more robust worksite enforcement.”

The government’s vow to crack down on companies that do not comply with immigration laws comes after 20 years of minimal enforcement. In fact, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, which has since merged with DHS, scaled back worksite enforcement operations by 95% between 1999 and 2003.

Now, more and more employers are facing criminal felony charges for crimes such as fraud, harboring and transporting illegal aliens, and money laundering. The government is also threatening violators with enormous fines and forfeitures of company assets.

Be advised, on the radio again today, the Congress is lining up to either attempt pushing thru amnesty or shelving immigration for the year. If employers are not held responsible with severe penalties not much else will matter.
I can’t stress enough the importance of letting your congressman and senators know your position on this issue. It does matter. They will notice with 2008 around the corner.
My hometown has drafted an ordinance like Hazelton, PA and have consulted with them. Those hiring illegals would have their license revoked, i.e., be shutdown. But we still have to fight the local bleeding hearts on this. Ya, the same ones that will whine the most if their life is adversely affected by their own foolish viewpoints.
