China’s Twofer Sale: Toothpaste and Antifreeze in One

It was bad enough that the wheat gluten and other wheat products from China were tainted. The popularity of this food item in preparing other foods makes it a massive potential threat. But putting an antifreeze component in toothpaste is way over the top.
The Chinese claim the toothpaste label has been approved by the FDA. With Vioxx and other products under fire lately, anything the FDA approved would not be a big surprise. But approving anti-freeze in toothpaste does seem a bit unlikely.
If this keeps up we won’t have to worry about terrorists in the typical sense. All enemies will have to do is export poison to us and we will eat it.

China rejects U.S. warning on toothpaste

The FDA increased its scrutiny of toothpaste made in China because of reports that the products may contain diethylene glycol, a thickening agent used as a low-cost - but frequently deadly - substitute for glycerin, a sweetener commonly used in drugs.
Also, the toothpaste’s labeling has already been registered with the FDA, allowing it to be sold in the U.S, the statement said.
DEG was blamed for the deaths of 51 people in Panama after they took tainted cold medicine. China has admitted it was the source of the deadly chemical but insists it was originally labeled as for industrial use only.

This particular incident is still in the warning stages, but just in case I have Bruce using glycerin-free gel toothpastes.
In a country with an overpopulation problem, poisoned products is not considered a big deal: the punishment for being caught is a fine of $3300. The problem is that these tainted exports would be in the product pipeline for months before someone finally connected the dots. Now, of course, we know that whenever there’s a mysterious disease, the first thing to check is Chinese imports.
But what a mess! I can’t wait for the American companies to catch on to the fact that you need to be able to assert that the ingredients are of local origin.

Greetings Chairman Meow:
The disease that originated on Wall Street and in corporate boardrooms has taken the mantra of profit at any cost to its logical conclusion. Globalization is a code word for stop dropping bombs on each other, it is more sinister to kill each other discretely with plausible deniability.
Egg rolls anyone?
