Do Congressman Sell Their Votes?
With approval ratings at their lowest levels in ten years the report below should be no big surprise. What was a surprise is Rasmussen Report indicating about 1/2 of Americans are paying attention to the Jefferson case. But then with 16 counts on the indictment and 90 grand in a freezer, opinions have probably already been set.
The public must have done a little math since some claim $10,000 would be enough to buy a vote while others maintain $50,000 would be the minimum required. Somehow both of those sound like chump change. Since the vote buying biz appears the realm of the rich and powerful, six figures is likely needed for any serious consideration unless the group buying method is used. You know, campaign contributions and all those smaller amounts from related entities. Just the fact that there are over 30,000 lobbyists and they pay both parties to hedge their bets implies the cost per vote must be beyond the reach of the average citizen’s income.
Americans are still trusting used-car salesmen more than politicians and think there should be term limits. Well. except for Dems who narrowly trust their Congressman more. But the best part is over half of all Americans favor a competitve independent or third party to improve politics. Barring statistical error, another nine points would make that number 2:1. And the report states again that party affiliation is declining with more voters moving to independent.

Friday, June 08, 2007
Fifty-six percent (56%) of Americans believe that most members of Congress are willing to sell their vote for either cash or a campaign contribution. That view is held by 60% of Republicans, 49% of Democrats, and 59% of those not affiliated with either major party. From a generational perspective, those over 65 are a bit more trusting than younger adults, but even 41% of the nation’s senior citizens believe most Congressman are willing to sell their vote.
