Democrats Feed on Their Victims

It is not a new concept for the Democrats to claim they champion the cause of the ‘people’. And their people comprise a vague, ambiguous and continuously changing subset of the population defined by whatever their current political scheme requires by their own choice. That there is contradiction in their choice of victims to represent would do an ambulance chasing lawyer proud. If you cannot produce a plausible foundation for an argument supporting legislation, just invent a new victim. But there longstanding claim of defending the disenfranchised, down-trodden or less fortunate among us has fallen on hard times as well. Their lack of leadership upon reaching the status of majority party in Congress now has them sacrificing one set of their victims for another.
While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of late has taken to prayer to plead for no veto from President Bush on SCHIPS legislation, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is comfortable with the belief that poor people who smoke are likely to quit when they are asked to fund the new legislation with a new federal tax on tobacco. While you may not break down and cry that smokers who are poor will fund the SCHIPS legislation, how does the Democratic party actually reconcile punishing one set of their victims for another?
A conclusion you may draw is that circumstances have become so desperate for the Democratic party to cause them to expose the insincerity of parading victims in public in an attempt to embarrass the opposition. From MoveOn’s misfire of insulting the military, to pandering surrender in Iraq as a campaign strategy, to poverty tours and re-proposing failed health care legislation the Democratic party has accomplished nothing with their 100 hour agenda, NOT draining the swamp or participating in their own slogan of a new direction for America. With nothing left but to admit their ineptitude, they opt for pitting one set of victims against another.
Poor Smokers Would Pay for Health Bill
By CHARLES BABINGTON, AP
WASHINGTON (AP) — Congressional Democrats have chosen an unlikely source to pay for the bulk of their proposed $35 billion increase in children’s health coverage: people with relatively little money and education. The program expansion passed by the House and Senate last week would be financed with a 156 percent increase in the federal cigarette tax, taking it to $1 per pack from the current 39 cents. Low-income people smoke more heavily than do wealthier people in the United States, making cigarette taxes a regressive form of revenue.
“I’m very happy that we’re paying for this,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said in an interview Friday, noting that the plan would not add to the deficit. “The health of the children is extremely important,” he said. “In the long run, maybe it’ll stop people from smoking.”
“I know there is very little sympathy for smokers these days,” Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., said during the House debate. “But it is still a tax increase on the backs of the smokers. And in order to get enough money to pay for this, it would require 22 million new smokers.”
