Lipstick

News reports today suggest that Obama was not targeting Sarah Palin with his ‘lipstick’ comment. And they further express that McCain suggested Hillary Clinton’s heal care proposal was putting ‘lipstick’ on a pig. The phrase originates from sales humor of making a bad product appear attractive to customers in hard sell tactics employed by less than scrupulous sales people.

When McCain used the phrase some time ago Hillary had not used the term lipstick in presenting a humorous turn of phrase as Sarah Palin has about hockey Moms and pitbulls. The use of the phrase by Obama comes so close after Palin’s use of it that drawing the distinction as an insult directed at Palin from Obama is not a stretch. If Obama could not see it as a hazard then it is simply proof that he is out of touch rather than his claims his opponents are.

What Say You, Women of America?

McCain PalinIt is one report on speculation about Sarah Palin’s effect on voters or more correctly, asks a question on what her effect will be. Specifically from the standpoint of those who supported Hillary Clinton and perhaps the gender vote. As an aside, while preparing this post other sources of this AP report were viewed with an interesting result. The links to the sources are offered below the AP report excerpt. KGET in ‘the Bay Area’ and KRON have what can only be a truncated or edited version of the AP report. The content they provided along with the original AP report title convey a much different idea than the original. And the MSM wonders why they are being criticized. (more on that later)

Reference to an ABC News Poll suggests Palin attracts 6% to McCain while Biden attracts 12% to Obama. That information, on its own, is of limited usefulness except to say that shortly after her appearance on the national political stage, Sarah Palin is already drawing half as many voters to McCain as Biden is to Obama. And Biden is a much more known quantity in US politics. Another interesting poll result from Gallup suggests 8/10 Clinton supporters will vote for Obama but that information was gathered after the McCain VP announcement. Number one, things may have changed since then. Number two, where is the information about the other 20%? Are we to assume they are voting for McCain/Palin? Or are there intentions something different than voting for either major party ticket?

18 million is this bigIf there are the now famous 18 million Clinton voters from the primary elections and 20%, or 3.6 million are not voting for Obama, that could mean McCain/Palin had close to 4 million of Obama’s party voting for them simply by announcing the selection of Palin or even without her on the ticket. But that is the problem with bits and pieces of polling data. It always leaves you needing more information about the data and it is hard to tell what significance, if any, is demonstrated by polling data.

A repeat or additional set of comments by or from Gloria Steinem and Ellen Moran from Emily’s List present some generalizations that may play or be rejected by anyone reading the report. The concern on this blog is that their sort of ’sound bites’ may play and influence unsuspecting voters. The disaffected Clinton vote, gender vote or whatever subgroup Steinem or Moran are talking about is not likely a 100% up or down vote on either major ticket. For either commenter to suggest that there are very few or no liberal voters selecting McCain/Palin this year is as much hogwash as saying no conservatives are voting for the Democratic party ticket. The more compelling question is which ticket will succeed in drawing the largest segment of voters from the other ticket’s core voters or base? Even after the election we may not really know based on how skimpy the MSM is with real facts and data that can be validated. Ya, I know, another shot at the fourth estate or whatever the artist formerly known as journalism calls itself these days.

George WillWhich brings to mind one of the fine examples of the few remaining journalistic practitioners on the planet; George Will. If you already read columns by George Will you need no prodding by this blog to continue. If you are not familiar or have not read his material, you should. The style of writing alone is enough to bring back readers. Combine that with inspiring viewpoints, apparent knowledge and historical references provided, George Will is a must read. In these days with an abundance of media hacks, it suggests there may be hope for journalism yet. (Okay, enough uncompensated plugging for George Will)

The last comment in the AP piece is especially telling about people’s viewpoints and how twisted they can get in politics as well as other parts of life on the planet. A woman not fond of Palin suggests that the ‘18 million cracks’ in the glass ceiling did not include Sarah Palin. Oh, I get it, some die-hard liberals don’t really believe their own Kook Aid about championing the cause for the people and apparently if you don’t share their viewpoints you do not qualify as a ‘people’.

If Hillary Clinton’s challenge for the Democratic Party’s Presidential nominee furthered the cause for women and the ‘glass ceiling’ issue, it applies to Sarah Palin as well as any other woman. Or do liberals apply their own sniff test as to whether or not any person qualifies to be treated fairly? You know, you only get rights if you submit to the Liberal Kool Aid Acid Test and pass as a certified kook fringe far left liberal.

Rant concluded. The central point for offering this post besides a few shots at the MSM and liberals was to suggest that polling data is of limited usefulness and it is just as reasonble to suggest that McCain/Palin is benefiting from the Democratic party division more than the liberal commentary may be willing to admit.

Most Clinton backers say Palin’s too far a stretch
By JOCELYN NOVECK – 21 hours ago

Sandy Goodman was deeply disappointed when Hillary Rodham Clinton didn’t get the Democratic nomination, then again when she was bypassed for the VP spot. So Goodman, a longtime Florida Democrat, flirted with thoughts of shunning Barack Obama, and perhaps even voting Republican.

Then John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate, and suddenly things became clear to Goodman: The Republicans had no place for her.

“Boy, you are sure not talking to ME!” Goodman, 61, says she thought when she heard Palin’s views on issues like abortion rights. Now, Goodman is volunteering for Obama.

But then there’s Chrissie Peters. The 37-year-old librarian from Bristol, Tenn. has always voted Democratic and supported Clinton. She assumed she’d vote for Obama — until she saw Palin speak. Now she’s voting Republican.

“She was so down-to-earth, a regular person,” says Peters. “She hasn’t been in politics her whole life, so she isn’t jaded or tainted. And I love that she’s a mom. Yes, I disagree with some of her positions, but that’s what this country is about.”

One of the most intriguing questions about the Alaska governor’s sudden arrival on the national scene has been what impact it’ll have on women voters — especially those who supported Clinton.

Dems Personal Attacks vs GOP’s Country First

Maggie’s Notebook
Conservative Thoughts

It is the GOP’s turn now. After the little bounce that Obama received for the DNC, reported by the MSM as the smallest in many years and now shrinking, his attack dogs focusing on Sarah Palin’s family has given the news cycles away and off whatever message Obama might have. While Obama and Biden try to distance themselves from the Democratic party’s personal attacks on Sarah Palin and family one is reminded of the Clinton precedent to leave children out of it. Something the left, including the MSM has abandoned this time around.

So the RNC is turning the party vs party debate to issues that matter. President Bush point out ’staying on offense’, stopping attacks and preventing another as he has since 9/11. The left’s central talking point is hope and change and not wanting four more years of the GOP. How much hope can you have that their change would prevent another attack on American soil. For all the opposition criticism of President Bush, we haven’t been attacked since 9/11. And the terrorist setup for that attack happened on President Clinton’s watch. The 9/11 Commission, often mistakenly cited by Pelosi as a plus for Dems, clearly demonstrates the docudrama ‘The Path to 9/11′ is true. The Clinton Administration dropped the ball and dropped 9/11 is President Bush’s lap. And some want them back in the White House in the form of Barack Obama and their foreign policy guru Joe Biden who was part of the Clinton terrorist debacle?

And as for the left’s attacks on Sarah Palin, including the MSM, the real reason they are upset by McCain’s VP pick is while they claim Washington is broken and requires something other than Washington insiders, Obama picked politics as usual Biden and McCain opted for someone not beholding to the Beltway. McCain and Palin both share the ability to ignore party politics to get things done. In contrast, Obama began his political career with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, other Hyde Park lefties and the Chicago political machine of the Daly variety. He has picked politics as usual and reinforced that with Joe Biden regardless of what his campaign claims. That is why they are upset about the defections of Joe Lieberman, the Maverick McCain and his running mate conservative reformer Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

Earlier on this blog it was suggested in another post that the RNC needed substance not rhetoric. While some rhetoric in a political campaign is almost required, as long as it does not dominate the message certain allowances can be made. But as the article below demonstrates, speakers are presenting the fact that national security and defense has been successful during the Bush Administration as evidenced by no attacks since 9/11 and victory in Iraq. The so-called ‘maverick’ approach that has been a central theme of McCain’s history and his choice of running mate Sarah Palin will correct any departure from conservative principles on limited government, fiscal restraint and traditional values.

These are the things that keep Barack Obama up nights. If you view his campaign from the primaries it is clear that all three candidates, Clinton, Edwards and Obama stressed the far left agenda. All three touted the DNC, Reid and Pelosi slogan of a New Direction for America. You got the 2006 midterm Congress you asked for and their approval rating as well as their agenda are in the tank. And some want to continue that into 2009 and beyond. You’ve got to be kidding.

For all the slick marketing and rock star image making, Barack Obama is more of what the last paragraph described. With the GOP ready to correct the mistakes of the current administration yet continue its successes, trading for the empty hope and change of Obama would be tragic. As a guide, just remember the disgusting display of MoveOn and the fringe left against the troops and General Petraeus while the main three Dems candidates stood by and did nothing. Agreeing by their silence they would have accepted defeat and surrender. Not something anyone should accept. Yet they did. And they will in the future. If you don’t want that for your family, the choice is obvious.

For all their faults, the Republican Party has kept this nation safe. Without that all other issues are moot. This blog believes the choice is clear. If you have an opinion, share it.

Republicans Attack Democratic Policies at Convention

Robinson report - Download (MP3) audio clip
Robinson report - Listen (MP3) audio clip

Republicans put their convention back on track Tuesday in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a televised satellite address from U.S. President George Bush, and speakers who praised the character of Republican nominee-to-be John McCain, while sharply attacking Democrats. At the same time, controversy about McCain’s selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate continues to grab headlines, as Republicans rallied behind her and prepared to formally nominate their candidates on Wednesday and Thursday. VOA’s Dan Robinson reports. President George W BushPresident Bush used a 10 minute satellite address from the White House to praise Senator McCain, citing his defense of the military surge in Iraq, and describing him as someone who will protect Americans from further terrorist attacks:”We live in a dangerous world. And we need a president who understands the lessons of September 11, 2001: that to protect America, we must stay on the offense, stop attacks before they happen, and not wait to be hit again. The man we need is John McCain,” he said.

Tuesday’s speakers brought a change in atmosphere, as Republicans escalated criticisms of Democrats and McCain’s Democratic opponent, Senator Barack Obama.

Senator Joe Lieberman, now an Independent who was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in the 2000 presidential race, said he was appearing in support of McCain because, as he put it, “country matters more than party.”

Lieberman has drawn criticism from Democrats in Congress for his strong support of Senator McCain and President Bush’s Iraq policies, and had this sharp criticism of Democratic presidential nominee Obama.

“When others were silent about the war in Iraq, John McCain had the guts and the judgment to sound the alarm about the mistakes we were making in Iraq. When others wanted to retreat in defeat from the field of battle, which would have been a disaster for the U.S.A.,” said Lieberman. “When colleagues like Barack Obama were voting to cut off funding for our American troops on the battlefield, John McCain had the courage to stand against the tide of public opinion, advocate the surge, support the surge and because of that, today America’s troops are coming home, thousands of them, and they’re coming home in honor.”

John Boehner, Republican minority leader in the House of Representatives, accused House and Senate majority Democratic leaders of doing little to solve American’s energy and other problems. Representative Michele Bachmann sounded a traditional Republican theme of less government:

BOEHNER: Washington today is broken and the Democratic Congress is its most visible symbol.

BACHMANN: Government is not a philanthropic organization. Government is not the family. And government certainly is not the church.

Fred ThompsonFred Thompson, former senator and television actor who ran an unsuccessful campaign for the presidency, sought to emphasize McCain’s credentials as a maverick who does what he thinks is right, regardless of what others say.

“He has been to Iraq eight times since 2003. He went seeking truth, not publicity. When he travels abroad, he prefers quietly speaking to the troops amidst the heat and hardship of their daily lives. And the same character that marked John McCain’s military career has also marked his political career. This man, John McCain, is not intimidated by what the polls say or by what is politically safe or popular,” he said.

While Republicans want to turn the focus of news headlines back to the main work of their convention, formally nominating McCain as their presidential candidate, he and his advisors are still battling questions about how thoroughly they examined Sarah Palin’s background before choosing her as a running mate.

Chosen for her social conservatism and anti-abortion stance among other things, she revealed this week that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter was pregnant, a fact Senator McCain says he knew. She is also the subject of an investigation in Alaska involving firing of a state official.

McCainMcCain advisors insist she was thoroughly vetted, and have provided journalists with details of the process. But media organizations quoted unidentified Republican party sources as saying Palin was not seriously considered until a week or so before McCain announced the selection.

McCain was pressed again on the issue during a campaign appearance in Cleveland, Ohio. “My vetting process was completely thorough and I am grateful for the results,” he said.

McCain’s Democratic rival, Barack Obama, says family matters should remain personal and not be mixed with politics, a view shared by Obama’S running mate, Senator Joe Biden. “I have a simple proposition. Children are off limits. Children are off limits.”

Senator McCain has predicted that Palin’s appearance at the Republican convention on Wednesday to accept the vice presidential nomination will help excite Americans about her candidacy. Republican delegates and others attending the convention expressed continued support for her and applauded McCain’s choice.

NYT’s Mix of Bias, Deflection and Errors

Posted in wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Biden, McCain, conservative, liberal, News Media, Clinton, obama, hillary, Opinion, Abortion, Gov Sarah Palin on September 1st, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

NYT BuildingPalin’s name was largely ignored by the MSM as being on McCain’s short list for VP but it was out there. For the NYT (and others) to claim her selection was such a shocker and that Obama’s staff was not smart enough to prepare for her is simply an excuse. To deflect criticism that the media dropped the ball on this one as well as the Obama campaign. The same campaign staff Obama has to chastise regularly for mistakes caused by the annointed one’s inability to manage them. And he wants to be President.

Campaigns Shift as McCain Choice Alters the Race

A day after Mr. McCain announced his decision, catching almost everyone but his inner circle by surprise, both sides were trying to gauge the risks and opportunities of having a young, relatively inexperienced, socially conservative woman on the Republican ticket.

The Obama campaign and the Democratic Party had prepared advertisements and lines of attack directed at the two men who had been most prominently mentioned as vice-presidential possibilities for Mr. McCain former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota but had not considered Ms. Palin a likely enough choice to do the same for her. A new advertisement linking President Bush to Mr. McCain was quickly put together, but it contained only a fleeting mention of Ms. Palin.

Another piece from the NYT that defies logic. They tell of changing times in Connecticut going from Democrat to Republican since the Reagan years and almost in the same breath report the area went solidly for Hillary Clinton in the primaries. That may be Republican where the NYT is from (no Clinton bias there) but anywhere else that is called Democrat or lost liberal. No wonder the NYT gets punked all the time.

NYT 1937Diner Poll Finds a Need for More Than a Speech

Once reliably and fiercely Democratic, it’s now home to many of the conservative Democrats who became Republicans in the Reagan years and have not come back. Even the names of the Democratic Town Committee members, Dugatto-Coscia, Chudoba, D’Onofrio, Gorzelany, Kurtyka, Murphy, Piscioneri, Varsanik, hark back to the old ethnic Democratic base.

While Connecticut’s big cities like Hartford and New Haven and high-dollar suburbs in Litchfield and Fairfield Counties voted for Mr. Obama in the February Democratic primary, the valley went solidly for Hillary Rodham Clinton. As such it’s the New York area’s closest stand-in for the blue-collar precincts in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan that could decide the election.

Do you really think liberal pro-choice women will vote for a gun-toting, pro-life conservative? The NYT may be trying to get Republicans all a twitter like the Kleenex clutching, teary-eyed supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton the Felonious. Oh but they cannot vote for Obama cuz he’s not good for women and they are throwing a tantrum about Emily’s List betraying them. Once the tears dry and the hangover clears after a day of anger shopping these lost liberal souls will vote for Obama cuz the after effects of the Kook-Aid will redirect them.

Can You Cross Out ‘Hillary’ and Write ‘Sarah’?

Democrats, who make up the party that has long claimed the bigger pool of up-and-coming women, were quick to dismiss Ms. Palin as not experienced enough to be a heartbeat from the presidency. Mrs. Clinton’s supporters will never back her, they insisted, because she is against abortion rights.

To go against Hillary is not easy for us, Ms. Hackney said. We don’t take that lightly. We just don’t think he has a message. We don’t think he’s good for women.

It’s not about being bitter for Hillary, she said. Still, I think the Democratic Party took women for granted in the primary, they didn’t step on sexism when they should have, and I can’t support them.

And just so the NYT can attempt to look objective there is a pieece by a self-proclaimed fan of McCain/Palin who, whether you agree with him or not, offers a really well written op-ed. It’s worth the time to read. But this excerpt sums up the flavor of the writing.

ObamasThe Audacity of Hype

A stern editor could have improved the 4,500-word acceptance by cutting a thousand words of populist boilerplate and partisan-pleasing shots that offend centrists. But the die was cast before the writing began. The pretension of the fake Grecian temple setting clashed with the high-decibel, rock-star format and overwhelmed the history implicit in the event. Ancient Greeks had a word for it: hubris.

Let’s just say the NYT never fails to deliver. From the days of charges of treason by the right for hiding behind the 1st Amendment while they publish items that jeopardize national security to the daily left leaning opinion on everything sprinkled with rare bouts of reality the NYT should have their own Greek columns to advertise their hubris.

Hillary Money Heads to McCain

Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, McCain, News Media, Clinton, disclosure, ethics, hillary, Opinion on August 28th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

From Bill Clinton’s announcement that Barack Obama’s campaign claims are the biggest ‘fairy tale’ to Hillary Clinton’s statement that she and John McCain have the experience to be President of the United States while Obama only has a ’speech he gave in 2002′ they now both try to convince the American public that Obama is ready to lead. The Democratic party mantra of ‘hope and change’ is HOPING you did not notice this CHANGE. At least 85 prominent Clinton campaign donors did notice or saw it coming months ago and have switched their flow of contributions to John McCain.

hillaryedwardsbill clintonobamabiden

Some of Hillary Clinton’s most fervent supporters are taking their enthusiasm and their campaign contributions to John McCain

As Barack Obama prepares to accept taking his fairy tale to the public on behalf of the Democratic party his running mate Senator Joseph Biden assumes the attack dog role of VP nominee. This is the same Biden famous for a tendency toward plagiarism who hosted a luncheon to make nice with the person he plagiarized in 1990.

Published on July 19, 1990, The Washington Times
Sen. Joseph Biden Jr., who became famous for purloining political rhetoric, yesterday made restitution with beef tenderloin for the author of his best material. The Delaware Democrat was host at a Senate luncheon for Neil Kinnock, leader of the British Labor Party, from whom he plagiarized a speech three years ago that caused a minor scandal and derailed his 1988 presidential campaign.

Perhaps the two Dems are running mates based on these tendencies. Hillary Clinton pointed out that Obama plagiarizes Governor Deval Patrick and Obama did not deny it but …

Obama downplayed the significance of the accusation.

“I’ve written two books, wrote most of my speeches. So I think putting aside the question … in terms of whether my words are my own, I think that would be carrying it too far,” Obama said.

“Deval and I do trade ideas all the time, and you know he’s occasionally used lines of mine,” Obama said.

Obama said he also used some of Deval’s words at a Jefferson-Jackson dinner in Wisconsin.

“I would add I’ve noticed on occasion Sen. Clinton has used words of mine as well,” said Obama. “As I said before, I really don’t think this is too big of a deal.”

The plagiarism thing may seem trivial and perhaps it is. What is not trivial is what the practice says about the candidates. What else that is wrong do they think is no big deal?

cashJoe Biden once took PAC money but now is PAC-pure
Los Angeles Times
Barack Obama makes a point of rejecting money from political action committees, condemning them as a symbol of what’s wrong with insider politics in Washington.

Edwards’ Money Man Also Has Ties to Biden
By Matthew Mosk
When newly minted vice presidential pick Joe Biden arrives in Denver, he will be greeted by one of his most generous supporters, trial lawyer Fred Baron.

Okay, which is it? Is Biden PAC pure and we should believe he is not beholding to money interests or is the Edwards’ money man one example of who pays for Biden’s politics? Barack Obama wants you to believe that money does not influence his candidacy. Did Obama change his mind on public financing of this year’s campaigns and election? Is the Clinton clan’s feigned support of Obama for political purposes no big deal? In the primaries Obama was not experienced enough but now the Clintons reverse their opinions that he is. Is that no big deal?

And Biden must have been wrong on Obama as well. Biden said in the primaries that the Presidency does not lend itself to on the job training. That Obama is truly the Messiah. He has acquired the experience to be President in a matter of months. Is this all no big deal?

From the liberal bastion of the print media there is a suggestion of the qualities Barack Obama would seek in a running mate. All of the attributes mentioned certainlyhuma abedin remove Hillary Rodham Clinton from the list of prospective Vice-Presidential candidates for the Democratic Party. Easy to believe if Barack Obama’s appeasement and concessions to the Clinton mob that mimic what his foreign policy would be like explain his attempt to be shielded from their wrath. Not easy to believe if he has any notion of selecting as candidate a woman he did everything against to defeat which was nothing since her pathetic campaign could not keep their eye on the prize for all the internal turf wars. That’s too bad as many were anticipating more pix of Hillary’s very close assistant Huma Abedin. The only noteworthy aspect of the Clinton campaign.

The Early Word: Obama’s V.P. Want Ad

By Michael Falcone

If searching for a running mate were as simple as posting an ad and asking for resumes, here are a few qualifications that Senator Barack Obama might be looking for: Someone who is “not about ego, self-aggrandizement, getting their names in the press, but our focus on what’s best for the American people. I think people will see that I’m not afraid to have folks around me who complement my strengths and who are independent.”

That leads to the next reports in which Clinton wants to embarrass Obama at the convention but wants to deflect blame or criticism from the party. The plan is about as lame as a Democratic campaign, either Clinton’s, Edwards’ or Obama’s. If people make a scene her ‘whip team’ will stand in front of them with Obama signs. Ya, that will quell the revolt. Is that the Dems answer to foreign powers who threated the US, stand in front of them with signs?

The link below has more on the juvenile moves of Clinton backers and Clinton’s sophmoric response intended to deflect criticism yet advance her own agenda.

Hillary Rodham ClintonHillary Clinton’s Staff Looking to Avoid Embarrassing Anti-Obama Demonstration

Anti-Obama group won’t give up on Hillary Clinton

People United Means Action (though most everybody calls them Party Unity My Ass). They organized in June. They can’t stomach “Nobama,” as they call him. Or “The Precious” or “The Unity Pony,” among other choice names. Pumas believe the sun rises and sets on Hillary’s forehead.

The reference above describes the obvious lack of unity with the Dems party faithful plus the insanity that takes over when rabid far left whackjobs have overdosed on liberal Kook-Aid. It may also explain the Dems party elite worrying over Obama or any Democratic party candidate having a chance to win in November.

Back to the Obama VP choice the only rumor worth mentioning was a brief noise about the possibility of him selecting Colin Powell. Now there’s a man who so far has been smart enough to stay out of it. Why ruin a perfectly good resume’ and why end a pleasant retirement to go back to the insanity of politics? But for those with the odd notion that there is a specific time for a black candidate for President, Powell would have been the best choice hands down. And that statement should not require any further explanation.

The reason there is no picture of Obama in this post is that there is no candidate in the Obama campaign. Hillary has gotten more mileage out of Obama’s campaign than he has. She lacked the leadership to run her own campaign. He has acquiesced to her in his campaign and no one in the Dems party has a clue. The best thing a VP selection can do is decline the invitation.

The Jackass Part of Donkey Politics

Posted in wordpress, Politics, campaign, Democrats, Clinton, obama, hillary, Gambling on January 14th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

clintonobama
So whatever happened to the all for one and one for all mentality of organizations that endorsed candidates? Specifically, why are labor unions split on which Democratic party candidate to support. And why would blue collar back Clinton and white collar back Obama in New Hampshire but two unions split between tweedle dee and tweedle dum in Nevada? And if casino execs back Clinton in Nevada why is the teachers’ union bothered by the culinary union’s caucus arrangements?

In Vegas, Politics Comes to The Strip
Caucus Sites in Casinos Become A Flash Point
By Paul Kane and Alec MacGillis, WaPo
January 13, 2008

Under rules set by the Nevada Democratic Party, only casinos that have been organized by the most powerful labor group in Las Vegas, the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, were selected as caucus sites.

In New Hampshire, Clinton fared best among working-class and middle-class voters, while Obama did better with higher-income voters and in college towns — a demographic that Clinton at one point mocked as people who “don’t need a president.”

“Not only am I among friends, I am also among the best of the labor movement in this country,” Obama, a senator from Illinois, said in a speech Friday night at the union’s hall on the north end of town.

party politicsA union official suggested that Clinton’s backers indicate she is supported by the Dems party elite. Since that same power and influence anointed Kerry in 04 and saw Edwards submit to the notion, how does he explain Kerry’s endorsement of Obama this year? Rather than have Kennedy openly represent the party will it would appear that Kerry was the party spokesperson this time. As a side note it is interesting that Shelby Steele was on Moyer’s program on PBS this week expressing his opinion that Obama cannot win. And now two unions are fighting over which left candidate to support. Could it be that just like the failed New Direction of the Democratic party majority in Congress that the DNC and everyone else involved in party politics cannot pick a candidate?

In the GOP it is a little less surprising that a front runner has not been decided yet. Romney has the most delegates and a rarely mentioned win in Wyoming. Huckabee won Iowa. McCain won New Hampshire. And it is yet to be seen if Romney can win more contests as well as whether the uncommon strategies of Thompson and Giuliani will produce their desired results. With at least five candidates in the GOP with a chance to win compared to the two or three on the Dems side you might think the Dems should have an easier decision to make. But then the GOP is not contending with a couple of firsts. The first black candidate and the first woman candidate for President may prolong the decision process. Or is it just typical of Dems to have no new direction or be able to produce a unified front?

So if you are on the left side of things, simplify your life and pick a liberal in the GOP. For the uninformed that would be Giuliani, Huckabee or McCain. Or is the contest in the general headed for a showdown between Romney and Clinton as some have suggested?

It was especially interesting that Obama referred to one group as ‘the best part of the labor movement’ and Clinton described another group as one that ‘does not need a President.’ Are these not the type of statements that candidates regret at some point? It certainly supports the notion that when these two candidates speak of uniting America it is the rhetoric they claim to denounce or criticize each other for using.

Britney, Clinton, Porn

fixationsThat’s what tops the most popular news stories at Google this a.m.  It really doesn’t matter if Clinton’s ‘moment’ turned the vote in NH or if yet another Britney story is absorbed by the mindless masses.  And certainly the porn story from a tech magazine is of little usefulness.  In terms of politics and judging from stories around the planet it appears no one learned anything from the discrepancy of the polls and the outcome in NH or how we choose leaders.

It might be wiser to allow some of the political contests play out minus all the predictions and forecasts.  Years ago a report suggested many voters, consciously or not, tend to vote for who they think will win.  It sounded as stupid then as it does now but is easy to believe.  No one wants to back a loser.  The fact that too many people do not vote, and that of those who do too many may select a candidate for the wrong reasons is compounded by the typical pattern we observe, participate in or ignore each election cycle.  And from this we pick leaders for this country as well as less significant elected offices.

Is it any wonder that Britney, sex, Clinton, sex and porn and, obviously sex lead the most popular stories at one search engine’s news rankings.  This of course is closely followed by an item about throwing kids from a bridge, Congress being engaged in baseball drug inquiries and fortunately a couple of stories that might matter.  And we’re going to pick a President this year.

May the best candidate win and please don’t say who you think that will be.  There is way too much of that going on right now.

fun headlines on the Clinton campaign…..

from WaPo’s The Trail…
By Anne E. Kornblut
MANCHESTER, N.H

Several outside allies — John Podesta, James Carville and Paul Begala, all of whom served as advisers to former president Bill Clinton — all were mentioned as possible additions to her team of strategists, but each denied that they were being brought in on Tuesday.

Senior Clinton advisers were hunkered down at her hotel in Concord. None of her top campaign officials has traveled with her on the road in recent days, leaving the candidate to largely crisscross the campaign trail with her daughter, Chelsea, and aide Huma Abedin by her side.

The un-fun part was the broadcast network media distancing themselves from the constant talk of an upset in NH and favoring Clinton over others in their candidate focus pieces on the evening news. But then no one ever said the media was unbiased. This blog is biased in that content unfavorable to Hillary Rodham Clinton and others will be posted since too often the main stream, well funded, media glosses over or completely omits any scrutiny of candidates like Clinton. And if they care to dispute that statement they are more than welcome to contact this blog to discuss the matter and any rebuttal will be published. But they won’t.

More fun Clinton headlines…..

Movement In The Clinton World
Atlantic Online - Jan 6, 2008
Reines joines the rarified ranks of such luminaries as Sidney Blumenthal and Huma Abedin and Karen Hicks. Reines is a favorite quotemeister of reporters but …

Gee Wally, there’s that name again, Huma Abedin. Wasn’t there some sort of tabloid story about candidate Clinton and her? If they won’t scrutinize the substantial and glaring hypocrisy and misdeeds of the Clinton Clan, maybe the media can produce a story about Clinton and Abedin for readers. The way the masses absorb stories about Lohan and Spears, etc., they could sell plenty of ads with it.

Huma Abedin

And there was, of course, Huma Abedin! “The Wallflowers did four songs and they were amazing,” she told The Observer. read more »

Wow, there’s a story with the title of ‘Huma Abedin’ (popular girl).

Bosworth’s fellow fab femmes include Venus Williams and Hillary Clinton’s unflappable — and unbelievably stunning — aide Huma Abedin. …

Oops, no wonder there are so many stories about Huma Abedin. She was the search term after appearing in several results in Google News for the search term ‘clinton’.

Some of the other headlines in results for search term ‘clinton’ featured the Clinton campaign downplaying the Hillary Tears episode of the Clinton Soap Opera. Then there is one in which the title states that someone still won’t vote for Clinton. It gets better as the union endorsements in Nevada go to Obama.

Sorry Fox, this blog is sort of taking the liberty of posting this entire excerpt but at least the link is provided….

Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

Emotional Advantage?

Many political observers are saying that Hillary Clinton’s tear-up during a campaign event Monday may have helped to humanize her - and may have swayed New Hampshire voters — especially women — giving Clinton the votes she needed to beat Barack Obama.

But some skeptics question the spontaneity of the emotional moment. Take a look at an interview with the TV program “Access Hollywood” done Sunday — was this a subtle preview of things to come? Again that interview was done Sunday, and the emotional moment in the diner was Monday.

Reporters covering the campaign say to their knowledge — Hillary had never cried in public on the campaign trail before that Monday event — and had never talked about crying before that “Access Hollywood” interview Sunday.

Meanwhile the woman who asked the question that precipitated Senator Clinton’s tear-up says she believes the emotional response was sincere — but —she voted for Barack Obama anyway!

Not like it would take a great deal of convincing for most people to accept Tiny Tears Hillary was a fake like the rest of her campaign. It is too bad for the feminine gender that the first actual candidate for President from the same gender had to be Hillary Rodham Clinton. You could pick an example from many other women that would have been a compelling choice but they may not have been available or interested. It also may not reflect well on women that some of them should look so desperate for a woman President to accept HRC or her bogus attempt to convince the public she is human. It was as bogus as the excuse that trying to look like a man brings criticism of Clinton as well as looking like a woman. The reason that is bogus points to the real problem. It’s not whether HRC has masculine or feminine qualities. The absence of honesty and integrity would be the problem.

Hillary Rodham Clinton is strictly a political animal and not a very good one at that. Reflect on the baggage and the scandals. Especially the most relevant like the withheld First Lady docs and campaign irregularities like Norman Hsu or the dishwashers. As long as your at it, the planted questions in the audience and the inability to answer the driver’s license for illegals question in the debate. And again, her resume’ she claims to be 35 years of experience includes one failed health care initiative in her husband’s first term and 18 minor public laws most of which are sentimental like naming buildings, authorizing displays and the like. Ask her to name three things she has done, SPECIFICALLY, that qualify her to be President. She hasn’t named ONE yet. She uses vague terms or phrases like ‘worked on’ or ‘fought for’ when describing her accomplishments That is because she has none.

And if you look a little closer you will notice that Barack Obama and John Edwards have no accomplishments that qualify them for President either. Senator John Kerry was the last Dems nominee. Al Gore was before that. Two terms of Hillary’s husband and before that Jimmy Carter. What does this party have to offer?

The GOP has better liberal candidates, Rudy Giuliani or Mike Huckabee or John McCain. Of course a smarter voter would select either Mitt Romney or Fred Thompson.

Other good news while typing this post, ABC’s Nightline announced Bill Richardson intends to withdraw from the 2008 Presidential race tomorrow. And the final note of this post is that the DNC is still afraid of Mitt Romney. Why do you suppose so much attack flak was aimed at his campaign? And then he is further criticized for his campaign tactics when all his ads do is point ot the flaws of his rivals to counter their criticism of him. Funny how politics works.

P.S. Kathy at Conservative Thoughts has an impressive chart of candidates on the issues and a commentary that offers a prediction that this blog’s choice, Mitt Romney will likely face HRC in the general. And that is what scares the DNC. That Mitt Romney would face HRC in the general. You gotta love it.

Did Hillary Tears Scam Swing the Vote?

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, McCain, Clinton, obama, hillary, romney, Edwards, giuliani, huckabee on January 9th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

first lady bill? The funniest thing about the New Hampshire primary was Bill Clinton whining about the media. With signature Clinton audacity, Bill had the stones to complain that the media has not provided the needed scrutiny of Barack Obama. Then Hillary Rodham Clinton tries the tears angle. And considering the many reports indicating a substantial number of voters did not make up their mind more than a few days or even hours before the polls opened, it is not unreasonable to think the polls were not wrong but that NH voters changed their minds in the hours before the vote.

sen obamaIf the polls were right on Obama leading by at least 5 points in NH after a victory in Iowa and he takes second place in NH behind by 3%, again, it is reasonable to conclude with the women’s numbers in NH that the ‘tiny tears’ or mix and match Barbie routine of HRC turned the vote for a narrow Clinton victory. And as for the slick Willie media scrutiny complaint, where are those First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton docs Bill?

The questions and scrutiny of Obama or any other candidate pale in sen clintoncomparison to the scrutiny required of the Clinton scandals, from Whitewater and Vince Foster through TravelGate, the impeachment of the former President, Lewinsky and Norman Hsu as well as the locked up First Lady documents . The Clinton transgressions are getting a walk in another Presidential election. But commenting earlier this month on this blog that Karl Rove was right and HIllary Rodham Clinton is the GOP’s easiest target in a general election gets a boost in NH this week.

With the possible exception of Biden and Dodd dropping out of the race, nothing has really been decided yet. On the Dems side it’s one for Obama and one for Clinton with Mitt RomneyEdwards edging 2nd in Iowa and third in NH. For the GOP it’s one for Huckabee, one for McCain and one for Romney. That’s right, Romney won the GOP caucus in WY. In the big picture NH may be a psychological and traditional statistical measure for candidates but WY’s 3 electoral votes are nearly as important as NH’s 4 at this point in the campaign. Besides the one quiet state victory for Romney is the 2nd place finish in Iowa and NH although it should be noted that fact alone makes the nomination a tougher objective.

What will make this even more interesting on the GOP side is if Romney takes Michigan, Thompson takes SC and Giuliani takes Florida with his big electoral state strategy. The funny part for the Dems is Clinton has to win Michigan since Obama and Edwards are not on the ballot with the controversy over moving up the date. It is fair to say that for this blog’s candidate, Mitt Romney, the Michigan primary is serious. Here’s a little review from USA Today on the Michigan story.

Next stop on primary schedule: Michigan
By Erin Kelly, Gannett News Service
WASHINGTON — For the presidential candidates who survive New Hampshire, the next stop of the grueling primary season is Jan. 15 in Michigan.

The national committees of both parties are not happy with Michigan’s decision to move the voting date. While rules and regs are important it may illuminate a concern about how much control party politics has over elections that should be decided by citizens, one vote at a time. But then we all know that is not exactly how it works. For all the outrage expressed over questionable elections in other countries there appears to be little effective scrutiny over the way we do such business in this country. But that’s another story for another time.

Hillary’s Premature What!?

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, News Media, Clinton, hillary, Opinion on January 3rd, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

you decide

Robert Novak’s Jan 3 piece on HRC is a knee slapper if only for the title. That the experience topic as well as HRC being a centrist have remained in the discussion is also quite humorous. Hillary has said more than once that being President does not allow for on the job training. Maybe she should ask the former living Presidents including her husband or do some reading about other Presidents if she thinks Presidents do not learn on the job. Her only experience for her claim of being ready to lead day one is that her former President husband will be there. Which begs the question of who would be leading the country, her or Bill? Sort of a rhetorical question, isn’t it?

HRC’s ‘centrist’ spin or strategy fits nicely with never accomplishing anything on her own or taking any solid positions on an issue. Her campaign gaffe about driver’s licenses for illegals is a good and recent example. It would be fair to say that Edwards and Obama have probably made less mistakes in the campaign than the self-proclaimed experience candidate, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Add to that the miserable attempt at ’showing her softer side’ or ‘trying to look more human’. Can’t help remembering her GOP roots that were abandoned upon meeting William Jefferson Clinton. What does that say about her ability to lead? Will she change her positions based on people who impress her?

It’s not over til the fat lady sings and Iowa is by no means the whole shootin’ match but a poor showing may set up future failures in other contests. Novak made mention of Dukakis placing third in Iowa only to be later nominated. Another recollection was over the boob tube yesterday featuring the stat or trivial pursuit that 3 out of 4 Iowa winners went on to be President. And Dukakis did not do so well in the general. Perhaps that is Senator Clinton’s palm read.

Hillary’s Premature Triangulation
By Robert Novak

In order to win in Iowa, Clinton stresses “experience” (suggesting that support for Obama requires “a leap of faith”). With many more Democrats desiring “change,” voters preferring “experience” may constitute only 30 percent in Iowa (though that may be enough to win).

The threat of Obama winning Iowa makes it white-knuckle time for Clinton. With Obama ahead in some New Hampshire polls, a double loss for Clinton in the first two tests of 2008 raises the specter of Howard Dean’s total collapse four years ago after losing in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Hillary Clinton is surely no Howard Dean. Furthermore, Michael Dukakis finished third in Iowa in 1988 and went on to be nominated (as was the case on the Republican side for Ronald Reagan in 1980 and George H.W. Bush in 1988 after losing Iowa). But Obama winning in Iowa could be fatal for Hillary Clinton. It is believed in Democratic circles that Mark Penn, as the advocate of triangulation, would be the scapegoat, with Bill Clinton leading the trashing of the strategy that helped make him president.

Another Clinton Campaign Blunder 3 Days Before Iowa

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Democrats, governor, Clinton, obama, hillary, Edwards on December 31st, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

A fitting report to help usher in the New Year and give us something to remember about the old one.  Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is so good she can gaff her campaign without doing anything.  Maybe Governor Strickland is really working for the Obama or Edwards’ campaign.  Right before the Iowa caucus is not a good time to suggest it makes no sense and should be eliminated.

Whether you have a problem with who goes first or not, everyone should be able to tip their hat to the fine folks in Iowa who are as personally invested in the process as any candidate.  All the time and effort they spend on selecting their picks for public office stands in stark contrast to so many who complain about voting or do not even make the effort.

Perhaps Gov Strickland should study the Giuliani campaign this year.  It will be interesting to see the results for Giuliani in all the states he snubs for the big electoral prizes.  But aside from that it is nice to see the campaign of the one most say will win the election try to crash and burn 3 days before the first contest.

Clinton Surrogate Veers Off Script

December 31, 2007
By Jeff Zeleny

JEFFERSON, Iowa – At every campaign stop across eastern Iowa, Mr. Strickland repeated a message of electability, declaring: “She is the most tested politician in America.” He hailed the Iowa caucuses, saying the state served as a bookend to the traditional battleground role that Ohio plays in the general election.

In an interview with The Columbus Dispatch, Mr. Strickland said that starting the presidential nominating contest in Iowa “makes no sense.” He added, “I’d like to see both parties say, ‘We’re going to bring this to an end.’”

The Clinton campaign was quick to distance itself from his remarks, issuing a statement declaring “Hillary and Governor Strickland strongly disagree.”

Facts About Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Experience

Posted in Public Affairs, wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Clinton, hillary, Legislation on December 28th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
Earlier in the 2008 Presidential campaign the leading Democratic party candidate, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, entered into an argument that began with the famous description of her nearest rival, Senator Barack Obama, as ‘naive and irresponsible’ and that her experience in politics was superior to his. Her critics pointed out the only experience she could claim for her candidacy for President of the United States was living in the White House with former President William Jefferson Clinton, her husband, as First Lady. Her supporters suggested she played a more active role in government than a typical First Lady. This debate can continue indefinitely with no hope of solving the argument to anyone’s satisfaction. But the former First Lady’s ‘experience’ aside, the experience of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton can be factually represented by the legislation she has sponsored that became law since being sworn in for her first term on January 3, 2001. With her seventh year as a Senator coming to a close she has sponsored hundreds of bills of which a mere 18 have become public law.

A summary of the quality and quantity of these bills that became law is presented below followed by the Thomas database summary of them from the Library of Congress:

146 bills sponsored in the 110th Congress, as of this writing none have yet become law.

Presidential SealWhile Hillary Rodham Clinton argues she is qualified to be President based on her experience the fact remains that outside of a boat load of scandals she only has one failed health care proposal and 18 minor public laws on her resume’. Hardly a recommendation to assume the responsibility of Command and Chief of the United States.

The point here is that she refuses to release docs about her time as First Lady yet wants that time to count for her experience to be President. If she had not been married to William Jefferson Clinton she would not have lived in the White House. If she had not been married to William Jefferson Clinton she would not have lived in the Arkansas State House. If she had not been offered a heavily Democratic area in state of New York to run for the Senate there is a better than even chance she would not have been elected to the Senate. While in the Senate for seven years, a legislative body, she has sponsored 18 minor bills that became law and more than half of those were for naming a building after someone famous or some similar purpose. These items do not represent Presidential aspirations or ability.

33% Afraid of Clinton in New Poll

Posted in wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Clinton, hillary on December 21st, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Senator Clinton
It wasn’t that long ago that the DNC made a big deal about conservatives not being able to choose a candidate. The details of their purely political statements are fading now with the only recollection that they viewed a large % of undecided GOP voters to mean there were no candidates to excite the electorate. It was stupid then and it is stupid now.

But another report on the latest polls offers some political humor, some ‘I told ya so’ and indications not constructed on this blog for which there is a shared sentiment. First of all, the report announces 37% of likely Democratic voters still have no idea for whom they’ll cast a vote. If 2 out of 5 Dems still don’t know who they will pick for President, why are so many expecting Senator ‘did nothing, do nothing but fail’ Clinton will win the lefty nomination? If all the polls are of likely voters, how does 37% undecided, 40% for Clinton and maybe 35% between Obama and Edwards equal 100?

If you think about the recent surge for Huckabee, or any other significant ’stories’ in the campaign, it is reasonable to expect that there are probably as many people who have not decided who to vote for as there are those convinced they have made their selection. This blog and the person doing the typing for this post announced support for Mitt Romney last June or earlier. There are others known here who have selected Fred Thompson and maintained that position since well before his announcement or even forming a committee.

While the DNC made light of things early in the campaign, they probably are not laughing off the mere 35% of likely Dems voters saying they’re excited about HRC for President. The DNC may have been avoiding the obvious conclusion that the GOP had more to offer and the campaign season started early so people had plenty of time to make up their minds with a wide field of reasonable choices to attract a variety of conservative preferences.

Huckabee and Romney still show as tied in Iowa. But for the Dems, Clinton is fading while Obama and Edwards are holding their own. Giuliani playing for the big states and Clinton losing her lead means Iowa will likely fall to candidates not leading the national polls. Clinton and Giuliani are also not leading in New Hampshire. That leaves lots of room for everyone else and may change the whole ball game after the first few states are finished voting.

It was fun displaying results here earlier of a Zogby poll that raised some reader complaints. It was an internet poll under uncommon conditions and the referenced report today from Zogby may be unique also. It features Obama and Huck ’surging’ nationally. Ya, whatever. Point is, little is being said about Clinton in terms of leading. Most Clinton support continues to recycle old news.

A new Gallup poll finds that no other candidate from either party generates as much cross-party fear as Hillary Clinton does among Republicans.

Gallup asked whether those polled would be “excited,” “pleased,” “disappointed,” or “afraid” if various candidates were elected, 62 percent of Republicans said they would be afraid if Clinton were elected. Thirty-five percent of Democrats said they would be excited by this outcome.
