Healthcare Scam (7)

Posted in Public Affairs, Health, wordpress, Politics, youtube, News Media, Kennedy, lobbyist, disclosure, ethics, Video, obama, Congress, Legislation, Sen Dianne Feinstein on June 26th, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

This is the first time this blog has witnessed anything useful from Chuck Todd, ordained some kind of chief political guru for PMS NBC. His willingness to spew the MSM point of view on politics only serves to confirm the public suspicion of ‘the news’. Since the content of what this blog finds useful from Chuckie merely requires rookie reporter skills this may indicate what this network’s chief Washington correspondent (according to Wiki) should be doing (very little).

Chuck points to a press release, a video and the text of the video. No need to deal with the press release since it is from a group in (dis)organized labor and they expect all Dems to be in their pockets. But any time MoveOn can be again exposed for the special interest group they are which has nothing to do with the public interest, it should be done.

Below of course is the video and text for the video.

Script follows:

“California voters sent Senator Dianne Feinstein to Washington to fight for us. That includes fighting to pass President Obama’s health care plan. A recent poll shows that 71% of California voters want a significant overhaul of the health care system now.

But Feinstein has been dragging her heels, saying health care may just be too “difficult.”

News flash Senator: We don’t expect you to lead just on the easy issues.

Senator Feinstein, please: Fight for California. Fight for President Obama’s health care reform now MoveOn.org Political Action is responsible for the content of this advertising.”

MoveOn cannot be that bright or they believe no one else is. To express Feinstein is to fight for ‘us’ and connect that to passing an incomplete proposal on healthcare is absolutely absurd. It is as ridiculous as Mr Obama suggesting if we all get behind this we can get it done. Again, there is nothing to get behind because even if it was medical nirvana it DOES NOT EXIST. The draft proposal is being tortured in Congress and is not ready for prime time. The CBO trashed it in its current state and much of it has not been scored because it DOES NOT EXIST.

Everyone who supports whatever they think is healthcare reform will not yet find it in Washington DC. Nothing is complete and therefore cannot be debated or passed and signed into law. There would need to be a complete bill with all the trimmings before a feast begins.

On Chuck Todd’s little announcement there were comments and some are reviewed below. It underscores the confusion or lack of information on which people are drawing conclusions. If this is any indication of public sentiment we should all pray this thing doesn’t get out of committee in order to cement the fact it won’t pass this year. To agree to it now would be equivalent to giving approval for a contract before it is written and letting the other side fill in the blanks. If you would agree to that you qualify as an idiot.

Just the first few comments for First Read by Chuck Todd at what Limbaugh calls PMS NBC points to public opinion that may explain some of the illogical results from recent polls on healthcare minus any influence from pollster error, etc.

While the first comment expresses support for special interest going after Sen Feinstein it is for the wrong reasons. A better one would have been her conflict of interest while on MILCON and possible fraud or other corruption involved in directing contracts to her husband. But that’s another story.

If Feinstein has objections over healthcare reform it is likely again to be for the wrong reasons. But her opposition is useful contrary to the commenter’s position since there is no specific plan and no inconvenient details like how it will be paid for in terms of public funding. So while the commenter believes Feinstein does not look out for average people, connecting support for the current vague proposal for healthcare reform with caring about people is naive at best.

The next two comments demonstrate some intelligence by objecting to MoveOn for various reasons. Number two suggests they are targeting Feinstein because she does not agree with them. Number two gets extra credit for being right twice. Number three indicates disdain with politicians will get them forced out of office at the ballot box. Ya, how many times has that worked for you and how long has Feinstein been in the Senate? Number three loses the initial credit for objecting to MoveOn for talking nonsense about elections. If all bad POLS were voted out of office we would only have good ones in office by now.

The unfortunate case here is that two out of three comments apparently support healthcare reform and are prepared to take whatever Congress and the White House propose. If they approach all life’s problems this way no wonder this nation as a group makes so many mistakes.

Finally, two more good reasons to oppose Obamacare or whatever it is. Labor unions and MoveOn are in favor of it. That should raise plenty of red flags on anyone’s scam-o-meter. Feel free to review other ‘Heathcare Scam’ posts on this blog for more information.

Will Palin and Other GOP Gov’s Plunder the Pork?

Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, wordpress, Politics, obama, Congress, Mitch McConnell, Sen Dianne Feinstein, Gov Sarah Palin on January 31st, 2009 by Stanford Matthews

Gov Sarah PalinA combination of typical misleading information, at least headlines, from the MSM, the political celebrity which is Gov Sarah Palin, Democrats and Republicans, the pork stimulus bill and an organization with a willingness to do anything for a drink. How can you not love a story like that? The jury here is still out on whether or not the opening line in the first piece below is correct or not. Are ‘most Republican governors’ pushing for pork in the massive Obamessiah pork package? On the one hand it would seem a needless slap at their own party with the recent House vote in which every GOP Congressman voted NO. On the other hand the most frequent abuse at the state level in politics (rather than government) is to please local constituents by stealing all the federal dollars possible. By the success found in that ploy one can only assume voters are too stupid to realize that money is also public revenue from their tax dollars. And it also steals from taxpayers in other states as it is part their money too.

The last sentence in the first piece below suggest Palin is going to Washington for pork. This post began with an interest in checking on the claims of the statement that ‘most Republican governors’ are targeting the pork. So go figure, if you’re starting to check governors and while Alaska isn’t the first state by alphabetical order who comes to mind when you think GOP governor? For others Palin might not be the first to come to mind but it was here and that was the first stop. The second piece below suggests with its title that ALL Alaska lawmakers question Palin’s focus. C’mon, when the terms Alaska and lawmakers (plural) are used together does it not suggest all of them? Oh no, you say, it only suggests more than one. Point is at least in that piece the author provides examples of those who do and those who do not. The best part is it begins with the leader of the political opposition in Alaska driving by the mansion and wondering why the place is not all lit up? Was he hoping it was so he could bash her on global warming or greenhouse gases or her carbon emissions? But it made him wonder if she’s focused? How absurd that is. And to anyone wondering, the piece itself says the legislative session started on January 20 and it is only the 31st. Criticism comes quickly in Alaska.

Questions abound with Sarah Palin’s weekend trip to Washington DC. You can guess what they are. The first paragraph in Gov Palin’s press release ‘Non-Partisan Events in the Nation’s Capital certainly suggests although mildly vague that the Governor and her legislature are pushing for federal pork. The one who rose to fame on her self-promoted maverick and reform reputation even with questions on the bridge that wasn’t too far but went to nowhere and connections to other scandalous politicians is now going to campaign for pork????

Her state of the state near the end of the post suggests they were successful in bolstering the state of Alaska and storing some cash for this rainy day. As asked below, what is their condition and do they need help? Along with other 49 states one has to expect all cannot be saved by the Fed. And it all ends up being tested amidst members of an organization who will do anything for a drink.

GOP governors press Congress to pass stimulus bill

GOPNEW YORK (AP) - Most Republican governors have broken with their GOP colleagues in Congress and are pushing for passage of President Barack Obama’s economic aid plan that would send billions to states for education, public works and health care.

Their state treasuries drained by the financial crisis, governors would welcome the money from Capitol Hill, where GOP lawmakers are more skeptical of Obama’s spending priorities.

The 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, scheduled meetings in Washington this weekend with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and other senators to press for her state’s share of the package.

Alaska lawmakers question Sarah Palin’s focus

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Driving home at night from her Capitol office, the leader of Alaska’s House Democrats often passes the governor’s white-columned mansion and wonders why more lights aren’t on.

Rep. Beth Kerttula assumes Gov. Sarah Palin is out of town, though Palin’s staffers say so far their boss has been there for most of the legislative session that began Jan. 20.

Non-Partisan Events in Nation’s Capital

Governor Sarah Palin to Attend

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 09-12

Governor Palin to Attend Non-Partisan Events in Nation’s Capital

Alfalfa ClubJanuary 28, 2009, Juneau, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin is traveling to Washington, D.C. this weekend to attend a number of non-partisan functions while also visiting with her D.C. staff to continue discussions concerning the president’s stimulus package and Alaska dollars. The Alaska Legislature is working on a joint resolution urging the Obama Administration to pass a fair stimulus package, a point Governor Palin will stress while in the nation’s capital.

Governor Palin will first attend a dinner at the residence of Fred and Marlene Malek Friday evening. Fred Malek is a prominent business leader and the founder and Chairman of Thayer Capital Partners. In addition to his work in the private sector, Mr. Malek has had a distinguished career in public service. The governor is honored to have received the invitation and to have the chance to speak about Alaska and other issues impacting our state. A number of high-profile business and economic leaders are expected, as well as political leaders who will be making decisions on the stimulus package, including U.S. Senators Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), Dianne Feinstein (D-California), and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine). Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan will also be attending. On Saturday, in addition to the official meeting with her staff, the governor will attend the Center for Strategic and International Studies luncheon, which is a pre-Alfalfa event. Governor Palin will attend the Alfalfa Club Dinner.

These non-partisan and high-profile events provide Governor Palin with the perfect opportunity to speak further about not only Alaska’s needs, but how Alaska should be allowed to develop its natural resources in order to contribute to America’s quest toward energy independence. In keeping with tradition, President Obama is also expected to attend the Alfalfa Club Dinner.

The governor will return to Alaska on Sunday.

Contrary to published reports, the governor will neither be speaking at the RNC Winter Meeting, nor attending it.

###

editor’s note: The Alfalfa Club is an exclusive Washington, D.C. social organization which exists only to hold an annual banquet on the last Saturday of January. The group’s moniker is reference to the plant’s willingness to do anything for a drink.

from Gov Palin’s State of the State Address:

pumpin' oilAt a time when other state legislatures are staring at multi-billion-dollar deficits, and when our federal government proposes a deficit in excess of a trillion dollars this year alone, we have all the cautionary examples we need in the virtues of living within our means. With less revenue, we have an obligation to spend less money.

With our share of federal funds and Congress’ stimulus package, our obligation is equally clear: we must ensure these public funds serve vital needs – as is the case of infrastructure for our gas pipeline, needed by the nation; and the Kodiak Launch Facility, adding to national defense. President Obama pledged not to let this stimulus package devolve into the past familiar scene of politicians lining up for obscure earmarks. This is reform at work.

The excerpt below raises the question of how well positioned is Alaska to meet the current fiscal nightmare?

Two years ago at this podium, I urged spending restraint. I asked that billions of surplus funds be deposited in state savings. This struck me as a simple precaution against, as I described it, massive single-year cuts down the road, if and when we faced tougher times. You legislators agreed, so we can now meet our challenge in a stronger position.

Damn! I miss Sarah Palin (Sister Toldjah)

Bipartisan Spending Will Leave Obama with Nothing but Change

Posted in Money Matters, Bush, wordpress, GOP, Democrats, Kennedy, obama, kerry, Pelosi, Congress, Sen Dianne Feinstein, Rep Barney Frank, Dodd on December 17th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

With the President-elect’s choices to fill vacancies for a new administration heavy on former Clinton cronies and the often heard criticism of this being a third Clinton term the ‘change’ mantra of the Dems or ‘change you can believe in’ slogan from the Obama campaign suggest that all you can do is invoke the other Dems mantra….. hope. Not an impressive beginning for the next Presidential Administration but those who support the next President urge withholding criticism until he has had a chance to lead.

Obama changeIf not from the Clinton clan the choices for vacancies in the coming Obama Administration seem to focus on Illinois or Chicago politics. President-elect Barack Obama announced Arne Duncan, the head of the Chicago school system, as education secretary Tuesday and declared that failing to improve classroom instruction is “morally unacceptable for our children.” Relying on Illinois for filling vacancies may be a little risky. One example would be from the press announcement linked just above. A reporter was ‘cutoff’ when inquiring about Rahm Emanuel being on a federal wiretap discussing the Senate vacancy with the Blagojevich camp. All just mentioned are tied to Illinois and Chicago politics. It has been suggested that Blagojevich is not stepping down in hopes of negotiating deals for himself and his wife without which he might use whatever he has to damage Obama or Mayor Daley.

The only change seen so far appears to be 60 or so members of the freshman class for the 111th Congress. Al Franken is still engaged in the recount fight with Norm Coleman in Minnesota. The process, at the outset anyway, was grindingly slow. In the first two hours, the board had ruled on 46 votes challenged by Franken. Of those, the board awarded 26 votes to Coleman, 7 to Franken and 13 to the pile for ballots where intend couldn’t be determined or were disqualified because of marks that might identify the voter.

And Caroline Kennedy has decided to follow in the family tradition seeking to fill the US Senate vacancy left by Hillary Clinton in NY. And of course there is the vacancy in an Illinois seat for the US Senate that surrounds the soap opera that is Governor Blagojevich. The controversy for Kennedy lies in the fact that she emphatically endorsed Obama early in the campaign and now wants Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. On top of that there are those who publicly question her credentials for being a senator. One quote addressing her name recognition suggested J Lo has name recognition too. She has taken a different path in her life to this point than many in her famous family and that fact was even complimented on this blog in the past. Now that the family’s political prominence may be fading is that the driving force behind her decision?

PelosiThen there is the real Democratic party situation which is ‘no change’. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is still, well, Nancy Pelosi. Quick to make statements and predictions as in her forecast that Congress will pass a $600 billion stimulus package early next year but says hopes of accomplishing anything yet this year is fading. For Nancy, that certainly is not new. Continue to predict what will happen and when it does not blame the opposition party. In other words, we did nothing again this time but just wait until next time. Ya, whatever. And BTW Nancy, where is all the money coming from anyway? What happens when it runs out? Are you just going to start printing more?

More of no change from the Dems finds Dianne Feinstein as head of the Senate Intelligence Committee and John Kerry to head the foreign relations committee. Nothing new there and nothing to get excited about unless you are interested in worrying about what will go wrong next. Feinstein’s questionable conflicts of interest with her husband engaged in the defense business and her post on MILCON, the military construction appropriations subcommittee, never saw the light of day even though she resigned that post when allegations surfaced and claims to be an ethics reformer with earmarks transparency legislation. And John Kerry fancies himself some kind of major player in politics. He has seen his share of controversy but that does not necessarily translate into a stellar resume’. Failed attempts at a White House bid and running errands for the Dems elite does not propel a career. It would appear the committee assignment is a consolation prize for not getting Secretary of State after doing the party’s bidding.

The final note in this post on recent news features more irony from the Dems. It would be humorous if not so pathetic. The very people responsible for promoting policies that ignited the subprime mortgage mess are now complaining that the White House has not done enough to relieve homeowners in or near foreclosure.

“Absolutely nothing has been done to respect that part of the legislation,” Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters as she discussed the House’s agenda in coming weeks.

She and Frank have talked about “legislation that insists that the provisions of the (TARP) law be honored, before we release any more funds,” Pelosi said.

Legislation demanding more foreclosure mitigation will be ready within the next couple of weeks, said Steven Adamske, an aide to Frank, the Massachusetts Democrat who chairs the House Financial Services Committee.

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd said last month he was willing to legislate if the financial sector failed to do more to curb foreclosures, restrain executive pay and modify mortgages to help struggling homeowners.

The GOP has made some progress in returning to conservative principles including fiscal restraint by opposing more bailout programs but the effort is not entirely convincing. The White House seems content to negotiate a legacy by spending us into oblivion and the Dems are right behind them with a $600 billion stimulus package with no end in sight.

It might be fair to say that leaders in both the public and private sectors have lost their collective minds except for the fact these sort of dealings are not new. It is just the small matter of the numbers being used do not fit any reasonable equation. The math is not working. Politics and business as usual have run into a severe problem with reality. How large a burden is the American taxpayer expected to bear. It is understood that the small percentage of wealthy taxpayers at the top pay the majority of taxes in this country. But that is small consolation to the unemployed or those whose own budgets are strained to the breaking point even while employed. Not that we don’t all share in the problems currently faced. But those in a position to affect the most change toward solutions seem to be slightly out of touch with reality. Unless the only reality is to use their influence for their own gain and the rest be damned.

Merry Christmas

Feinstein, Pelosi, Boxer and Oil

Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, wordpress, Politics, oil, disclosure, ethics, Pelosi, Sen Dianne Feinstein, Sen Barbara Boxer, Energy on August 26th, 2008 by Stanford Matthews

While returning to research for updating a previous post series, Women in Politics, the following editorial was found. It provides a little light onto Dems, California and the energy situation in the US. Although some of the points have been expressed elsewhere, nonetheless, it is a good brief read. As we approach the November election and the Dems hold there convention in Denver, this item from the Lompoc Record is especially timely.

Move over, Dems, let oil flow

Why aren’t we drilling for more oil in Santa Barbara County?

Ask the Democrat movers and shakers on the South Coast. While you’re at it, ask the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Lois Capps and Senator’s Feinstein and Boxer and the entire California Democrat delegation.

Locally, on July 3, the Board of Supervisors at the urging of 1st District Supervisor Salud Carbajal placed an “emergency item” on the agenda “to consider opposing the opening of federal waters to oil drilling” after President Bush lifted a moratorium on offshore drilling.

Then, when it was learned that several well-informed citizens would speak on the issue, it was suddenly dropped from the agenda. My, that’s a brave move, but not unexpected in a political environment dominated by overanxious liberal environmental activists who favor shrill rhetoric over an objective analysis.

Dems feed on victims, then each other

HRCLooking back at Hillary Rodham Clinton’s criticism of Barack Obama as naive and irresponsible, the statement should be left on the table while everyone considers recent actions by the former First Lady. Her campaign finance irregularities are as bad as those of Tom Delay and Jack Abramoff yet few if any in the liberal ranks will press the issue as they would if she were a Republican. Jefferson’s $90K in the freezer is evidence of that.

Promoting a transparent remake or sequel to her failed health care idea more than a decade ago is as irresponsible as anything with which she accuses Obama. Add to that her lame energy and education policies and a manic attachment to the fringe left with a global warming panic and this self-proclaimed centrist earns her socialist moniker.

EdwardsBut for Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Edwards inventing villains and feeding on their campaign designed victims is not enough. Perhaps the stress of a longer than usual campaign season is beginning to crumble their plans. Lately, HRC can’t find enough gaffes to fill a day on the trail with the TipGate and QuestionGate to follow ChinaGate and TravelGate. So the planted questions story now has Clinton and Edwards feeding on each others carcasses and looking all the naive and irresponsible which she accused Obama of being.

‘Planted’ questions: Edwards compares Clinton to Bush; she says it won’t happen again

Clinton The news — and now confirmation — about instances when the presidential campaign of Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton “encouraged audience members to ask her specific questions” (as The New York Times rather cautiously puts it this morning) has opened up another round of sharp words with one of her Democratic contenders.

As our Gannett colleagues at the Des Moines Register write:

Hillary Clinton’s campaign was acting like President Bush’s when it recently planted a softball question from an Iowa audience member, rival Democratic candidate John Edwards said Sunday.

Clinton camp accuses Edwards of acting like Bush
DES MOINES, Iowa (CNN) — In a sign of the increasingly bitter feud between the leading Democratic presidential contenders, Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign Monday accused John Edwards of acting like President Bush and dividing Democrats.

A student says she was told what to ask during a Clinton event in Newton, Iowa.

On Saturday, Edwards, while campaigning in Iowa, criticized the Clinton camp for planting a question in the audience, saying the practice is “what George Bush does.”

“George Bush goes to events that are staged, where people are screened, where they’re only allowed to ask questions if the questions are favorable to George Bush and set up in his favor,” the former senator from North Carolina said.

But it is Edwards who is acting more like the sitting Republican president, the Clinton camp says.

“What George Bush does is attack Democrats and divide the country,” Clinton campaign spokesman Mo Elleithee said Monday. “Sen. Edwards’ campaign resembles that more and more every day.”

DemsThis sort of behavior is problematic for the Democrats and is present throughout the party. Their strategy to attack the Bush Administration, appeal to the fringe left by condemning the military, maverick missions to appease state sponsors of terrorism and generally characterizing all conservatives or Republicans as evil is as complete a failure as one could imagine.

DemsThe Congressional majority owned by the Democrats since the November 2006 midterm elections has once again delivered proof that their party is not capable of leading a scavenger hunt much less a government. Their giddiness at winning the last Congressional majority omitted any consideration that one has to actually bring forward sensible initiatives to perform adequately in politics and have any chance of success.

This post ends with an excerpt from a WaPo item.

The Can’t-Win Democratic Congress
By E. J. Dionne Jr.
Tuesday, November 13, 2007; Page A19

Democrats in Congress are discovering what it’s like to live in the worst of all possible worlds. They are condemned for selling out to President Bush and condemned for failing to make compromises aimed at getting things done.

Democrats complain that this is unfair, and, in some sense, it is. But who said that politics was fair?

Over the short run, Democratic congressional leaders can count on little support from their party’s presidential candidates, particularly Barack Obama and John Edwards. Both have decided their best way of going after front-runner Hillary Clinton– who has been in Washington since her husband’s election as president in 1992 — is to criticize politics as usual.

The Schumer Epiphany Oxymoron

Conservative Thoughtsparty politics

Whenever the word bipartisan is used an alarm should go off to warn the uninformed or remind the politically astute of impending skulduggery from government whether at the federal, state or local level. While politicians tout bipartisanship as a process that should be endorsed by the public, the truth is the only purpose it serves is that of politicians. Contrary to the proposition that bipartisan efforts embody a noble and altruistic function by public officials, it is merely a contrived ploy involving cooperation from both parties for a mutually beneficial outcome. That outcome in no way suggests any benefit for the public at large.

One commentary on the current issue dealing with the Senate confirmation of President Bush’s nominee for AG points to Senator Chuck Schumer’s performance on this issue.

SchumerSchumer’s Epiphany
November 5, 2007

Michael Mukasey’s prospects for confirmation as Attorney General seem to be resuscitated, thanks to the endorsements of two Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee. We suppose this counts as progress — of a sort.

On Friday the New York Senator ended his indecision, noting that, while Mr. Mukasey was “not my ideal choice,” he was “the best we can hope for” from President Bush. California’s Dianne Feinstein also came out in favor; she reportedly made up her mind earlier in the week but waited to announce her intentions to give some cover to Mr. Schumer. That’s another indication of the leftward pressure on Democrats.

As the commentary above notes the probable motives of both Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Dianne Feinstein, the press release below indicates Schumer’s evolving position on Mukasey from 2003. If he is unsure of his own choice for AG, why was Mukasey on his short list for SCOTUS?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 10, 2003

WITH SUPREME COURT VACANCY LOOMING, SCHUMER OFFERS PRESIDENT BIPARTISAN APPROACH; SUGGESTS LIST OF CONSENSUS PICKS FOR HIGH COURT

Schumer’s action intended to inject bipartisanship into confirmation process to ensure that next SCOTUS nominee gets backing of all 100 Senators, not just 51

Schumer’s list for the Court include several Reagan judicial
appointments and a prominent Republican Senator

Schumer submitted the following names:
• Senator Arlen Specter, Republican from Pennsylvania.
• Judge Ann Williams, Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, nominated by President Reagan to the Northern District of Illinois.
• Judge Edward Prado, Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, nominated by President Bush.
• Judge Michael Mukasey, Southern District of New York, nominated by President Reagan.
• Judge Stanley Marcus, Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, nominated by President Reagan.

The only real surprise on Schumer’s short list above is no candidate from the Ninth Circus but since this was obviously an attempt to gain favor with the public and his political rivals there is no need for it to make sense. These are common characteristics of bipartisanship. In the abstract, a notion such as bipartisanship is a good thing. But like so much in the real world there is little chance those good things will ever be realized by this process.

And one last point about this particular claim of bipartisanship. The torture issue in this confirmation process is merely the primary characteristic of political camouflage.

Recruiting Former Government Leaders

Posted in Public Affairs, Money Matters, wordpress, Politics, disclosure, ethics, oversight, Foreign Affairs, Hagel, Sen Dianne Feinstein, Richard Blum on June 12th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Power BrokersOften the target of public scrutiny and anger politicians have earned their lowest approval rating in a decade. Senator Harry Reid’s latest numbers for approval are at a paltry 19%. In contrast, for all the bad press, bad moves and just plain bad results, the President’s approval rating is nearly twice that. In the last month Congress’ overall approval rating also fell below the Presidential approval rating. We may be spending too much time looking at current members of Congress and a sitting President. What about the others? Those who have left public office but still have their fingers in the pie in a subtle way. At least subtle in terms of public scrutiny. The effects of their involvement and the ethics and legality may not be so subtle.

The public perception of organizations like the Carlisle Group, Blackstone Group or SAC Capital Advisors and former world leaders associated with them may be nearly non-existent. It is not in the best interest of these businesses to maintain a high profile in the public sphere. Power brokers on a global scale rarely seek publicity.

The report below features some well known former leaders in the ‘private equity’ and hedge fund business. Among them is none other than Madeleine Albright. Her activities and influence involve more than simple investments.

Show me the money: Ex US officials swell hedge funds’ ranks

by Justin Cole Sat Jun 9, 11:42 PM ET
WASHINGTON (AFP) - What do three former US Treasury secretaries, one time secretary of state
Madeleine Albright, a former US ambassador to the United Nations and ex Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar have in common?

They have all been recruited by powerful hedge funds or private equity firms since departing government, while Albright has opened her own hedge fund: Albright Capital Management.

The secrecy surrounding such investment firms and media headlines about the vast riches generated by SAC Capital Advisors, the Blackstone Group and the Carlyle Group among others have only added to their mystique.

Who works for whom? The almost cloak and dagger secrecy of former leaders and their association in questionable practices is just a continuation of what normally goes on in Washington. However, the impact of wheeling and dealing in business and political situations on a global scale may have sinister implications on the motives and end game pursued by these individuals and groups. There activities certainly would not exclude influence on current government leaders as indicated below. Perhaps the public should pay more attention. Which raises the question of whether the MSM is largely ignoring these stories or the public is simply not interested.

The ex-presidents’ club The Guardian

Oliver Burkeman and Julian Borger Wednesday October 31, 2001

It is hard to imagine an address closer to the heart of American power. The offices of the Carlyle Group are on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC, midway between the White House and the Capitol building, and within a stone’s throw of the headquarters of the FBI and numerous government departments. The address reflects Carlyle’s position at the very center of the Washington establishment, but amid the frenetic politicking that has occupied the higher reaches of that world in recent weeks, few have paid it much attention. Elsewhere, few have even heard of it…

Party AnimalsHere are a few more related ’snippets’ of information pointing to the wide variety of former leaders extending their influence beyond what was done in public office. It is useful to note that the ‘investment’ firms mentioned above are opposed to legislation and oversight regulating their activities. So far no one in Congress has successfully addressed this issue. Why would anyone in public office want to interfere with their next career move? The popular career move for politicians after public office is either typical lobbyist employment or as an ‘advisor’ to one of the groups mentioned above or starting their own like-minded firm as did Madeleine Albright and probably others.

Posted in Money Matters, Health, Bush, wordpress, Politics, McCain, Immigration, Kennedy, Kyl, disclosure, ethics, Specter, Law, Justice, Grassley, Border Control, Legislation, durbin, Sen Dianne Feinstein, Sen Barbara Boxer on June 11th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

This is easily the fourth or fifth time a post on this blog has urged citizens to continue pressing Congress and the White House to abandon S. 1348 and simply enforce current immigration law. More information has surfaced on why the Senate amnesty bill is bad legislation.

A Kennedy aide said lawmakers are negotiating to pair Republicans amendments with Democratic ones should the bill resurface. The amendment strategy also includes an overall “manager’s amendment” with language proposed by Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., on H-1B visas and employer-based green cards as well as changes to two amendments adopted by the Senate on guestworkers and confidentiality rights for illegal immigrants.

As if it was not bad enough Senators like Dick Durbin claim to be opposed to illegal immigration and immediately submit amendments on visa matters but now Maria Cantwell is pushing the same thing and worse. For those who claim an intention of bringing illegals out of the shadows, hard coding ‘confidentiality’ seems an odd way to do it. This is just another example of all the political deals associated with this legislation. The worst is it offers amnesty and just as bad it will increase visas, quotas and every other way to accommodate the rest of the world and ignore the needs of US citizens.

How can any bill be worthwhile with 350 amendments waiting that are published on the Congressional information website Thomas (click here) The reasonable conclusion to draw is the bill will essentially be rewritten on the fly. So, they cannot pass a flawed bill, they will weigh it down with amendments and to buy votes they’ll pass some of them. No one will take the time to read what they really have and the bill will be dumped on the American public.

This amendment situation is such a mess it is nearly impossible to tell the good guys from the bad or who is trying to do what with the amendments. One can only assume they are meant to sway votes one way or the other or simply cause so much frustration the bill dies. The bottom line is everyone still needs to urge their reps to kill S. 1348. There is no chance it will do anything but deliver amnesty for illegals and do nothing to solve the problem.

One of the most disturbing items aside from the list of amendments being at 350 and counting is a sentence that accompanies many of them. Purpose will be available when the amendment is proposed for consideration. Nothing like being kept in the dark while you’re being kept in the dark.

Amnesty YEAs and NAYs

Justice and the rule of lawWe all know that political matters can rarely be taken at face value. The saga developing over S. 1348, a so-called bipartisan compromise bill claimed to be immigration reform, is proving to be the evidence that the White House and Congress are incapable of abandoning special interest or ignoring election politics. This senate bill is more accurately characterized the amnesty bill as those referred to as the ‘architects’ (Kyl, Graham, Kennedy and McCain) all seem to favor amnesty.

This is the first of what may be a series of reviews on this week’s amnesty battle. On Tuesday June 5, there was a vote on an amendment proposed by GOP Senator Wayne Allard of Colorado. If one takes the amendment at face value, it appears to be a fair request to not give preferential treatment to those who enter the US illegally. For the moment, this post will skip over the visa dilemma for now. Except to say there are plenty of flaws with how that item is treated also.

Senator Kyl tried to appear opposed to amnesty when the Senate took up this matter after the 2005 House vote which passed HR 4437. During the debate in the Senate then, Cornyn and Kyl were sending mixed signals. This time Kyl is given credit for spearheading this effort to provide amnesty. And he voted against this amendment. This would be an example of why things cannot be taken at face value. The big question mark on Kyl should be changed to calling him in favor of amnesty. And that would not be a good thing.

Below is the Allard amendment description. After that is the roll call results which tell much of the story.

Allard Amdt. No. 1189; To eliminate the preference given to people who entered the United States illegally over people seeking to enter the country legally in the merit-based evaluation system for visas.

Brownback (R-KS)
Dodd (D-CT)
Johnson (D-SD)
Lieberman (ID-CT)
McCain (R-AZ)
Obama (D-IL)

Four Presidential candidates for 2008 again declined to vote on the issue of illegal immigration. Apparently for them, political considerations are more important than doing their jobs and going on the record. As much as one can find fault with Hillary Rodham Clinton and her support of amnesty, to be fair, at least she voted this time. The no vote list is next.

Opposition to Amnesty is Working

Posted in Announcement, Bush, Terrorism, wordpress, Politics, McCain, Immigration, Tancredo, Kennedy, United States, Law, Justice, Pelosi, Reid, Border Control, Legislation, Sen Dianne Feinstein, Sen Barbara Boxer, Sen Robert Menendez on June 8th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Illegal ImmigrationIt was encouraging to see these headlines and the lead story that produced them prominently displayed on Google News’ front page this morning. They are presented here for your benefit. At the bottom of the list is Ted Kennedy’s take on S. 1348. The bottom is a fitting location for anything Kennedy has to say. It would appear he expressed an expectation of a ‘close’ vote on the bill. Sure he did. Sounds more like wishful thinking. Was that thought produced before or after cocktail hour?

By the sounds of things on the radio this a.m., S. 1348 is all but dead and Harry Reid and others have indicated it is time to move on to other things. This would be where their threat of accept this crap now or forget about immigration reform until after the 2008 elections. If we let this happen, nothing will change. Obviously, the open borders crowd, including McCain, Kennedy, Reid and the California girls (Pelosi, Feinstein and Boxer) like that idea. If they were allowed to visa everyone they wanted and fill their personal quotas with illegals until now, they have no interest in enforcing immigration controls or advancing border security.

Sen Harry ReidWhat do you need with immigration reform when the broken system is working for your selfish gain? What’s a couple of terrorists now and then if you can supply your business donors with unlimited cheap labor to harvest your soon to be tainted food supply?

There is every reason to believe that this is one of those rare moments in politics where the public has applied sufficient pressure on Congress to thwart one of their stupid ideas. But don’t get over-confident. Congressional leaders as well as the White House have plenty of tricks. Continue to apply the pressure and thank those who are doing the right thing in opposing amnesty. This fight won’t be over at least until the condition of illegal immigration begins to be reversed.

The public outrage and opposition to S. 1348 comes from both sides of the issue. Illegals had plenty they did not like about this bill. That means those opposed to amnesty cannot relax. Your efforts to contact Congress and the White House on this issue is working. Do not stop now. The House won’t take up the issue until the Senate passes a bill. Do not allow it to be S. 1348 and do not allow the Senate to postpone this fight until after the 2008 elections.

A solution that has much support is one that was mentioned here a long time ago. New legislation is not required if you enforce the existing laws. The best solution would be to force the executive branch to enforce existing law and the legislative branch to add language that, for instance, provides the verification systems and severe penalties for employers who hire illegals as well as border security enhancements that make sense. Pass the word to your elected representatives. More on this later.

Obama, What Have You Done?

Posted in wordpress, Politics, campaign, election, Biden, Democrats, Gore, Kennedy, Clinton, hillary, Pelosi, Murtha, Reid, Edwards, Sen Dianne Feinstein, Sen Barbara Boxer, Bill Richardson, Dodd on June 6th, 2007 by Stanford Matthews

Sen Barack ObamaWhat has Barack Obama done? He knows that, based on race, color or creed, not to mention a host of other demographic details, the race card is always available for counter-attack on anyone who expresses objections on an issue or proposes solutions that annoy the left. That’s right. If you have no substantive argument and therefore can only offer race card rebuttals, you are free to say whatever you want. Even if what you say is as racist as those you accuse of being that way.

On a radio program this morning, a talk show host and his guest were discussing this story. The question came up on why Obama is using this particular stand and why now? The guest answered that the left’s 43 year exploitation of civil rights issues as a manufactured wedge against the right is their standard approach. Use this emotional theme to gain support from those who feel ‘disenfranchised’. The left fringe including Hollywood celebrities and other guilt-laden rich employ public relations strategies of appearing concerned about the less fortunate to improve their status. Other less wealthy left-leaning ideologues find these false causes appealing to enhance their standing among certain groups.

The theory here would be that Obama realizes that his fears of losing a Presidential run were based on his lack of experience, any relevant history and only a weak campaign strategy of relying on his public speaking skills. He continues to worry about setting himself apart from other candidates without a convincing strategy or anything more than he has already presented. Obama knows he needs something more and he just doesn’t have it. This is real simple politics. So what do you do? Raise a fabricated issue and try to make it hot button. It must also be something only you can use. What better choice than the race card. Speak of Katrina, Rodney King and race riots.

DemsThe masks are coming off the Democratic candidates. Edwards is all about betting on trashing the troops as a winning strategy. Hillary Rodham Clinton is all about socialism and the impossible task of reinventing your deplorable personal history. And now Obama stoops low enough to use the race card as his central theme. The GOP may have their own demons to exorcise. But at least that possibility still exists. As a matter of fact, most voters can get a real sense of practical solutions and good old-fashioned American leadership in candidates like Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson. The lack of realistic criticism for these candidates causes opponents to reach for imaginary problems as their weapons. Those attacks are easily dispatched.

Obama fears frustrations will lead blacks to violence

Associated Press
Posted Wednesday, June 06, 2007
HAMPTON, Va. — Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said Tuesday the Bush administration has done nothing to defuse a “quiet riot” among blacks that threatens to erupt just as riots in Los Angeles did 15 years ago.
The first-term Illinois senator said that with black people from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast still displaced 20 months after Hurricane Katrina, frustration and resentments are building explosively as they did before the 1992 riots.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi: Political Hack

Speaker PelosiOMG, so much political suspense and intrigue. Can Speaker Pelosi hide the fact that she will sell out anyone and anything for her personal political agenda? Doubt it. Is the Congressional Black Caucus beginning to regret any previous support of Speaker Pelosi? How does Steny Hoyer feel about Pelosi picking Murtha first for House Majority Leader? How does Murtha feel about his party ignoring him? Like that would matter to Jack Murtha.

This story illuminates the other failures of the Democratic majority in Congress. The Dems continue to claim the midterms were a voter mandate giving them license to torture the American people while they accuse President Bush of doing the same to terrorists. The Dems also claim ‘the American people have spoken’ and given the Democratic party their approval for surrender in Iraq and on the war on terror. Their illustrious candidate for President, John Edwards, refers to the war on terror as a ‘bumper sticker’ slogan. That is because he doesn’t have a clue and like other Dems will pander to the fringe for votes.

DemsBesides Pelosi, other prominent Democratic party members like Feinstein and Boxer want all the illegal immigrants they can fit in California. Not because the illegals yearn to be free, but the money is good in illegal immigration. All at the expense of American citizens and the future of this nation.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards all favor surrender, amnesty and any position on any issue that will get them elected. So it makes you wonder why the Congressional Black Caucus ever trusted Pelosi to respond in a manner that supports their goals. Talk about a party of lost sheep. And Harry Reid climbed on board as he saw his political fortunes in last year’s midterms. Rather short-sighted and naive of old Harry, wasn’t it.

GOPThe GOP deserved to get their due in the midterms. But only as a throw the bums out in terms of incumbents in which case the only alternative is usually the Democratic challenger. And the Dems thought the American public would buy in to the mandate speech. Sure, that is why the Congressional approval rating sank lower than the President’s all time low after the midterms. One could really look forward to more voter solutions in 2008. And the party pundits should reload their calculators. So far they haven’t understood the public is not happy and party favoritism is fading on both sides.

Democrats Fear a Wider Black Caucus-Pelosi Rift

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, June 5, 2007; A04
Democratic leaders fear that Rep. William J. Jefferson’s indictment yesterday on racketeering and bribery charges, coming exactly one year after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi engineered his ouster from the powerful Ways and Means Committee, could rekindle a smoldering dispute between the speaker and black lawmakers who were once pillars of her power.

Lawmakers scrutinize company’s rejection of Medicare claims

By David Whitney
McClatchy Newspapers
WASHINGTON -
Her husband’s business interests in PRG-Schultz have proved awkward for Feinstein, the state’s Democratic senior senator, as the hospital association turns to Congress for relief.

This is not the first time the Blum’s business interests have collided with his wife’s job. Blum Capital Partners is a major investor in Northwest Airlines, which in 1995 won the first contract by an American air carrier to fly to Beijing. Feinstein had been friends with a former Chinese political leader since she was mayor of San Francisco.

More recently, concerns have been raised in Republican circles about some of Blum’s investments benefiting from defense contracts at a time when the senator was serving on Senate military construction appropriations committee.

Feinstein’s press aide, Scott Gerber, said the senator played no role in the legislation creating the auditing program and did not intervene with program administrators to help PRG-Schultz get the three-year contract in 2005.

Our TroopsThe extreme peaceniks and others expressing less venomous opposition to the Iraq war often begin their arguments with reference to inherent characteristics of war as their central theme. Aside from the obvious death and destruction that accompanies armed conflict, they stress the loss of troops and civilians as their largest concern. But they will never accept the fact that this same expression of opposition has prolonged the war in Iraq by strengthening the determination of the enemy. In other words, opposition prolonging the war shares responsibility for the death toll that the anti-war crowd views with such disdain. How’s that for irony?

Each day that politicians seek political cover on the war in Iraq from these same anti-war critics also causes more loss of life. A prudent and practical human being regardless of ideology would sacrifice their own selfish interest in favor of the valiant contributions by those actually at risk of death. To express the realities of politics is simply more rhetoric and of little consolation to those who shoulder the real burden. If you are not now nor have ever been in Iraq, shut the hell up and get this thing done so those who are can satisfy the demands of both sides of the issue by achieving victory in Iraq and coming home that much sooner.

Illegal ImmigrationTo a much less dramatic issue but with equal potential for serious injury to the United States is illegal immigration. The reason for addressing it at the same time as the Iraq war is the focus afforded these two issues will distract from attending to other matters until resolved. The sympathy argument for illegals is another ploy that compels politicians to seek political cover rather than face the reality that this is simply an economic or financial issue.

The open borders crowd claims that illegals are merely seeking a better life is really describing a better income. The business community’s scare tactics about economic disaster without illegals is really describing lower costs and higher profits by exploiting artificial wage competition. Trying to solve the world’s problems by eliminating border and immigration control only exacerbates the symtoms.

Not securing the borders or controlling immigration is a national security risk we cannot afford. Allowing amnesty for lawbreakers only encourages its continuation. Not enforcing existing laws is a violation of the oath of office of all or most elected and appointed officials in the executive branch. Both sides of the issue, again, can be satisfied by effective control and management of the flow of people in and out of this country. Conceding to the demands of selfish special interest is not an option. Common sense demands this issue be solved now. The guiding force should be the rule of law not the whim of personal preference.

As a personal note, if you truly believe open borders are a good thing, I suggest this. Leave all your locks unlocked 24/7 from now on. Then let us know how long it takes before you experience something really bad. It is nice to think the best of people but that does not suggest ignoring the worst. They invented security because both exist.
