Edwards’ Claim Outs Dems and Defectors

John EdwardsIn this report from a week ago, John Edwards appears to believe he has found the Dems solution for withdrawing from Iraq. On this same topic, some in the media and some in the blogosphere have suggested the Dems are looking for an impeachable offense. As far as the legal expert in this particular report is concerned, the short reference is not very compelling to this ordinary reader.

RNC Calls Edwards’ Claim ‘Preposterous’; Legal Expert Disagrees

You might think Dems as a group would have already tried to use this idea if it were valid. If you read H Con Res 63 and related war powers material it is difficult to find any portion of the language that would support John Edwards contention. If it was a valid point and the Dems didn’t jump on it then it would seem their vocal objections are merely political posturing. That would be nearly as shameful as believing in earnest we should abandon the mission.

After making all this noise, the Dems have to continue with the withdrawal mantras to cover their political bets. The longer the US remains in Iraq, the more likely we will prevail. That would explain all the added noise and GOP defections after the President announced the troop increase. If more troops, a new Secretary of Defense and a new commander in Iraq prove successful the Dems and GOP defectors will look stupid and may never recover. To avoid that possibility they must encourage withdrawal to hedge political bets.

In most cases there is very little evidence that politicians ever make a decision that is not politically calculated. That makes them less convincing and trustworthy. That makes it easy to believe that whatever they do is in their own best interest.
