Obama talks jobs in hard-hit town
WHO-TV | June 18, 2007Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama is calling for new efforts to create jobs and end tax subsidies for companies that shift jobs overseas.
Obama was speaking to about 300 people in Newton, which was rocked by the closure of a Maytag plant and dealing with the loss of nearly two-thousand jobs after the appliance maker was bought last year by Whirlpool.
Obama says it’s not possible to stop globalization but that the government needs to look out for American workers.
Obama promised to increase federal grants and job training programs for communities that are dealing with job losses.
He also is calling for new incentives for companies that create high-paying jobs, and changes to the nation’s tax code to end subsidies that make it more profitable for companies to move overseas.
Obama also vowed to build protections in trade deals to protect American jobs.
