Open Trackback Linkfest

Welcome to Blog @ MoreWhat.com’s Open Trackback

United We StandThis is an open trackback linkfest. There is no theme or other posting suggestions. We wouldn’t want to stifle your creativity. And we have no reason to think it is necessary to provide any disclaimers, warranties, discounts or warnings. If you have any suggestions, criticisms, questions or just feel the need to communicate, trackback or let us know in the comments. And if you have some time, you can answer our question of the day in the comments section. I know, shameless blog marketing and promotion ploy. But hey, whatever works. The Question of the Day is being held over for another Open Trackback.

  2. Perri Nelson Says:

I know you guys don’t care for Microsoft.

After my recent “upgrade” experience with Visual Studio 2005 and Vista, I’m beginning to feel the same way. Visual Studio 2003 isn’t supported on Vista at all by Microsoft. Visual Studio 2005 isn’t either. Unless you have service pack 1. AND the update for service pack 1 for Vista.

I recently tried installing Visual Studio 2005 on my Vista machine. The installation went well, with only three warnings indicating that it wasn’t compatible with Vista. Then I downloaded and installed service pack 1, which is a prerequisite for the update that makes all of this “compatible”.

The problem is, my machine ended up trashed. It wouldn’t reboot, and now I can only use it in safe mode. It’s going to take me the better part of a week to clean up the mess left by this “upgrade”.

I’ve had a few bad experiences with Microsoft software before, but I’ve generally been able to work around the problems. Not this time.

I tried using the “last known good” configuration of Vista. That wouldn’t start. I tried using the “System Restore” feature to restore to the checkpoint before I installed service pack 1. “System Restore” failed. I tried the “Repair Windows” setup option from my Vista setup disk. That failed too.

I’m left with one option only now. I have been making sure that all of my source code, photographs, music, and financial data are backed up to one of my other machines. It’s a huge amount of data (57 GB).

Over my LAN the backup process says it will take a day and a half to transfer. The process has crashed twice.

Anyway, once the data has been transferred, I can start phase 2 of the cleanup, a complete wipe of my Vista system. I’ll install XP, then I’ll re-install all of my software. That should take about three days, knowing how slow some of the setup programs run.

Once it’s all installed, then I can upgrade to Vista (again). Then I can apply the “update” for service pack 1 of Visual Studio 2005.

Then, I can restore my data.

I purchased Visual Studio 2005 from the Microsoft Company Store at a STEEP discount. I think the time I’ve spent fixing this “upgrade” more than makes up for the discount.

Loyalty to a former employer can only go so far. Microsoft does make a lot of decent software, but this combination is a disaster. Spread the word.

  3. Perri Nelson Says:

Oh, and my vote for the Republican Party Presidential candidate for 2008?

    Tom Tancredo.

Please, please, please, don’t let us be saddled with McCain or Giuliani.

  5. C. Harris Says:

    Hi Perri,
Sincerely sorry to hear about the tech grief. The cheap bastards that we are and the duct tape and bailing wire approach we often use gets us in some interesting dilemmas. So we can appreciate the frustration and effort required to ‘clean up’ problems.
Stanford is away on biz today. I’ll text him the news.

In an office vote late last year, Tancredo was the overwhelming favorite. We only started promoting Romney for the other thing you said……not wanting to settle for McCain or Giuliani and Romney was the only active alternative, but we like him in general, it’s just Tancredo hasn’t appeared to be running at it yet. That is why we type ‘current favorite’, cuz so much can change between now and the ballot.

As always, your commentary is appreciated. Maybe we’ll post some MS stories from people we know who have interesting and varying takes on the subject. Ambivalence is a common sum of feelings regarding MS.
