Rights and Responsibilities in America: Civics Literacy (07)

Presenting another overdue installment of a series on civics literacy becomes much easier when one defers to the wisdom and skill of George Will. Blog projects like this one can demand a great deal of time per unit of output. Not only saving that but providing resources which draw the connection to civics literacy in terms of current events is more useful than only referencing history.

Toxic AssetsThe Toxic Assets We Elected is a piece by George Will that exemplifies the justification for his name being on anyone’s must read list. This particular offering addresses current folly by those in Washington and historical reference to the danger of such actions.

TARP has done no tarping. A note or two on currency which also supports the notion this administration’s agenda has something in common with much less democratic nations. The only part that may bring pause is mention of NAFTA. Yet the argument presented renders rebuttal a severe challenge. Although trade agreements and other treaties have raised concern about the North American Union and America’s slip to European style government.

The hypocrisy of some politicians is demonstrated by various statements from those now rejecting the value of the secret ballot in preserving voter’s rights. This compelling reminder and description of what is wrong continues with the Federal Reserve and with Democrats suggesting their party’s heritage is connected to Jefferson yet they dismiss his warnings.

Won’t spoil the conclusion here as reading this from beginning to end is half the enjoyment. You decide what the other half is.

The Toxic Assets We Elected
By George Will
March 24, 2009

WASHINGTON — With the braying of 328 yahoos — members of the House of Representatives who voted for retroactive and punitive use of the tax code to confiscate legal earnings of a small unpopular group — still reverberating, the Obama administration Monday invited private-sector investors to become business partners with the capricious and increasingly anti-constitutional government. This latest plan to unfreeze the financial system came almost half a year after Congress shoveled $700 billion into the Troubled Asset Relief Program, $325 billion of which has been spent without purchasing any toxic assets.

I just mentioned Will’s article in my latest post.

People elected this bunch of idiots in Washington and now they (we) are stuck with them. I cannot understand how some of these guys keep getting elected. I look at, and listen to, Barney Frank and just shake my head.
