Stop Congress from Making Another Mistake

There is a valuable article dated April 9, 2007 in the Washington Post. As mentioned here before, Congress is intent on passing immigration legislation before the August recess and Harry Reid has the last two weeks of May scheduled for Senate action on immigration according to this same April 9th article with excerpt and link below.

Illegal ImmigrationThere is proposed legislation called the Strive Act, HR 1645 introduced on March 22, 2007, which may give you the impression there are strict penalties for violating immigration law but on closer evaluation it weakens laws already on the books. The wording also gives employers who hire illegal immigrants a pass if they show some lame good faith effort to comply. There are workarounds for nearly every item listed that contradict any suggestion of enforcement. This is similar to proposals by the Bush Administration that provide infinitely renewable documents to allow alien workers to remain forever, the current version of the guest worker who never leaves.

Sponsored by a Democrat and co-sponsored by 32 Democrats and 7 Republicans. All but two voted against HR4437 and most voted for guest workers, public assistance for non-citizens and the appropriations legislation to pay for it with taxpayer money as far back as 1996. That is over 10 years ago. Do you understand now why we have millions of illegal immigrants in this country with no indication of the situation improving without strict legislation and enforcement?

President Renewing Efforts on Immigration

Plan for Overhaul Faces Battle in Divided Congress

President Bush will relaunch his push for an overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws today in Arizona, with a fresh speech on the border and a new congressional leadership that is friendlier to his views, but with the same dynamics that scuttled his last attempt: a cooperative Senate but bipartisan opposition in the House.

In contrast to her approach to other controversial issues, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has told the White House that she cannot pass a bill with Democratic votes alone, nor will she seek to enforce party discipline on the issue. Bush will have to produce at least 70 Republican votes before she considers a vote on comprehensive immigration legislation, a task that may be very difficult for a president saddled with low approval ratings.

Democratic conservatives, particularly freshmen who seized their seats from Republicans, weathered a barrage of attacks on the issue before their victories in November and are not anxious to relive the experience, aides and lawmakers say.

Justice by Rule of LawAs something of a test run, those of you reading this who are in favor of strong national defense and security, effective border control and strict immigration enforcement to correct current immigration violations and prevent more of it in the future, we urge you to express your opinion with a comment on this post.

On this blog we intend to develop an awareness of this situation and a convenient method for like-minded individuals to participate in actively lobbying Congress to pass strong, effective and practical legislation to end illegal immigration and provide adequate national security. But it won’t happen without citizen involvement. So again we encourage your participation in this effort. We begin today with a simple request for comment. If you are sincerely concerned, you need to participate to translate that concern to action.
