The Quiet is Backroom Deals on Amnesty
The problem with this article at the statesman.com is its use of the ‘path to citizenship’ misstatement rather than the accurate term of amnesty. The larger problem lies with President Bush, Ted Kennedy, Lindsay Graham, John Kyl, John McCain and others who pander to those profiting from illegal immigration.
The fact that these people have no problem giving amnesty to millions of people who violate the law is disgusting. But what really is pathetic is doing it for nothing more than money and votes. And the report says President Bush is looking at this travesty as part of his ‘legacy.’ It makes it difficult to respect the Office of President of the United States when the person holding that office is willing to stoop to such tactics for ego. Eight years of Bill Clinton, near eight years of George Bush and some scary possibilities for 2008.
Just some more reasons why the public must maintain the pressure on Washington. You can bet that right now in Washington the politicians are crafting not legislation but all sorts of dirty deals among and between themselves for buying votes from those opposing amnesty. Don’t let them stop hearing the will of the people. Continue to press them to enforce laws against illegal immigration and to abandon their amnesty plans in S. 1348.

Senate proponents say immigration bill still has a pulse
By Eunice Moscoso, Ken Herman
WASHINGTON BUREAU
Saturday, June 09, 2007WASHINGTON — But the fate of the drive to give millions of illegal immigrants a path to citizenship was uncertain.
“We are not giving up. We are not giving in,” said Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, the lead Democratic sponsor of the bill.
Republican supporter Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said, “There’s no reason this can’t be done in a matter of a couple or three weeks.”
An attempt to limit debate on the measure and move it toward a final vote failed Thursday night, which prompted Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to pull the legislation.
Bush and his advisers are counting heavily on immigration reform as a major piece of the president’s legacy.
